And just as a ponder...how would it have been if, instead of this illustration for a paladin

(snip)

we'd have had this one here in the PHB.

People would have been screaming it was too anime, for starters.

And probably videogamey.

I remember one of the Wizard Blogs mentioning the idea of having the new icons "upgrade" equipment as they went up levels, instead of having everyone dressed in scale armor all the time. I'd really like to see that, personally.

That's a great idea. I hope they're going for it.

It is very pleasant to take advantage of ready access to magic which allows one to alter the appearance of one's character, so as to confuse one's enemies, look more stylish, or simply to disguise the fact that the last fight you were in may have been a tad strenuous.

Hat of Disguise, best 1800 gold I ever spent. Party members will heatedly bicker over who gets to have it - being able to take a crossbow quarrel to the chest, grin, and have the quarrel just vanish.. (well, to sight, at least) just priceless. (Check with the GM over whether the quarrel counts as a "Worn Item" in her world.)

Solves all kinds of "ugly, but functional armor" style questions. Lets Ms. Purrocious equip mithril half-plate, but look like she's wearing.. well, whatever.

If you game with an artist, who loves to draw and redraw character costume options, this is hot stuff.

Oh come on...it's not Weapon of the Gods...it's not even really Exalted. And it's not Diablo II or WoW either, is it?

I quite like the art for Alhandra--I just wish there were something about her that said "paladin". Or is that what the gold sheen on her armor is for? (Fighters wear steel, paladins wear painted steel.)

Lady Linyth, however, is just creepy. Sensible, but crrreeeeppy.

Nice!

Really though, Alhandra stands out to me just because she should of been really easy to do. Female Paladin is a simple archtype that works well and appears rather frequently, especially, (suprisingly enough) in Japanese Video Games. I swear you can't throw rocks at your typical JRPG without hitting a Blond Paladin girl with a determined, if somewhat naive outlook on life, and an aristocratic bearing with long blond hair and shiny full plate.

I know what they were going for with the "Everyone is 1st level" thing, but it just doesn't work that well with Paladins.

Also, Sovelis's helmet makes him look like a nerd.

Even if budget were a concern, Alhandra isn't even sporting a true scale mail. She'd be better off with a chain shirt. And that make up? And the broken leg? How's about giving her a pose that shows her being confident and ready for a fight?

As for Soveliss, I SO agree:

Why can she only afford one half of the scale mail? :p
