You know...

As a Planescape fan I can understand that, though doesn't bastardization hold equally true for the City of Brass?

That city was noted to have strong connections to devils, but it seems less plausible now that devils are prisoners of the Nine Hells and demons roam the Elemental Chaos.

The City of Brass doesn't have nearly the game lore associated with it that Sigil does. Plus it has a mythological basis. Re-envisioning the CoB would have a lot less baggage than re-envisioning Sigil.

Getting back? When was Dungeons and Dragons ever fantasy in that mold?
I dunno about the myth part, but I think it started out a lot closer to Lieber-esque sword-and-sorcery than it later became. And now 4e is moving back in that direction, though it remains to be seen to what degree.

Gloombunnny,
*nod* 1st ed had a more "grungy Grimm Fairy tale/Fhard & the Grey Mouser" feel than later on, IMHO :)

I've went off Hollywood as the films are too polished, very inhuman and not very believable. Likewise 3rd ed had got to technical, too crunch, not enough fluff etc.

I agree for the most part. I think nearly everything I've read "flavor change" wise is excellent.

Its kind of funny...3E in retrospect seems to pay alot of lip service to prior editions of the game, IME/IMO but it really went off the deep end mechanic/rules-wise...all crunch. The Flavor and fluff of 3E is awful (despite the lip-service)

Now 4E..its totally re-working so many things within the game both mechanically and flavor-wise and this is obviously upsetting alot of 3.x fans, but for ME, despite the massive changes, it holds more true to "the spirit" of the original games roots. 4E very much seems focused on the story, the adventure, the unknown, and NOT all the rules crunch and rules lawyers and rules ad nauseum of 3.x (which drove me away from D&D)

And so everytime I see a design article or blog where my first reaction is " HOLY CWAP..YOU GOTTA BE KIDDIN ME! THEY ARE REMOVING/CHANGING/DOING WHATTTTTT?????????" I take a breath and just think it through before jumping the gun. Most of the time afterwards I find myself saying "OK...it doesnt sound quite like the D&D game I'm used to...but it does sound like fun, and probably would fit in pretty well with the type of fantasy game I like to run"

Not always, but most of the time. Still no Tiefling or Dragonboob PC's in my game
