Another add to say, do away with XP.
I recall reading how, in 3rd Edition they calculated the XP with the idea that the characters would have 3 or 4 encounters a session, then that would accumulate enough XP to raise level after about 4 game sessions.
I read that and immediately asked myself, why not just say characters level up after 4 game sessions? Or, if you have longer or shorter game days, 14 encounters? There is no real need to track this number.
I actually do something really blasphemous. After 3 or 4 game sessions, I ask the group if they feel ready to level up. We level the group up when it feels right. Done and done.
