Actually, we did - upon request. We found our unlined bags were plenty durable without a lining, but sometimes a lining would make the bag more pleasing to the eye.

Thanks Frank, I did that as a kind of a joke before everyone got sensitive and I just forgot about it. (I usually am just a lurker.) Although I'm a huge fan of 3.5, I don't have any animocity towards 4e, it simply doesn't interest me.

Be merciful... Easiest fix: the rogue's weapon has the merciful weapon enhancement. All damage inflicted was non-lethal and would have knocked everyone out for quite a while. This way there's no need to change the weapon to a sap. Since they were sleeping, they wouldn't know anything anyway...

You can take the non-epic Enhance Item feat from page 114 of the ELH. It allows any item you create to use your ability score to determine DCs, just like staves.
