Back in July, actor Vin Diesel got an awesome D&D birthday cake. Last night he posted a video where he talks about his recent game of Dungeons & Dragons with the folks at The Nerdist. I don't know if the game was filmed, or if we'll ever get to see it, but even so it's great to hear that Vin had such a good time. He's starring in the movieThe Last Witchhunter (out this month), and he played a homebrew Witchhunter class in this game. In fact, director Corey Goodman said he was largely influenced by talks with Vin Diesel, specifically about his Dungeons & Dragons witch hunter character, going so far as to say "If it weren't for Vin Diesel's 'Dungeons & Dragons' character, 'The Last Witch Hunter' wouldn't exist."
Although the 48-hour D&D game is over, Extra Life still continues -- and people can still pledge. WotC's Greg Bilsland dropped me a quick note to say "For folks wondering about the remaining Extra Life previews [of Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide] — we will still release them if we get to our thresholds. Extra Life is through end of the year, so the map may still be released digitally if we get to $100k.... We may still have a few other smaller events before end of year." The remaining items on the list included the Duergar race entry, including subrace traits, and a full, updated, high res, labeled map of the northwest portion of Faerün, from Amn to Icewind Dale, and the Moonshae Isles to the Dalelands.
Mike Mearls' latest Unearthed Arcana column presents the first ever 5E prestige class: the Rune Scribe! "Prestige classes build on the game’s broad range of basic options to represent specialized options and unique training. The first of those specialized options for fifth edition D&D is the rune scribe—a character who masters ancient sigils that embody the fundamental magic of creation."
Kobold Press is continuing its D&D 5E offerings with a new Kickstarter which is set to launch today (Monday). I'll update this article with the link when it arrives (update - it's now live), but the project is a new 5E monster book called Tome of Beasts. Kobold Press, of course, made the Tyranny of Dragons adventures for WotC. They've kindly sent along a preview of this new book - an eye golem - which is one of the more than 300 monsters in this book.
WotC's Extra Life charity funding campaign hit $50,000 just now, and as promised they added the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide table of contents to the already released preface. The chapters are Welcome to the Realms, The Swords Coast and the North, Races of the Realms, Classes, Backgrounds, and a two-page appendix dealing with using the aforementioned options in Dragonlance, Eberron, Greyhawk, and Homemade Worlds.
Only for EN5ider patrons! We prepare for our upcoming horror-themed Halloween month with a range of options for player intent on fighting the ghosts and ghouls who will feature throughout October! Kiel Chenier brings us Spirit, a Clerical Domain; Courage, a Paladin's Oath; and the Witch Hunter, a Roguish Archetype. Arm yourselves, because October is gonna be spooky! Illustrated by Ellis Goodson.
Fantasy Grounds, the officially licensed D&D virtual tabletop software, has just acquired Tabletop Connect, a 3D virtual tabletop which was successfully Kickstarted a couple of years ago. "Tabletop Connect is a system-neutral 3D virtual tabletop that lets you connect with your friends to play role-playing games just like you’re around a real table. You play in a true 3D environment—with miniatures, terrain tiles, physics simulated dice, character sheets, and handouts—you can almost feel the dice in your hands." Already one of the big two VTTs (the other being Roll20), this looks like it'll take online virtual tabletop gaming to a whole new level.
New for EN5ider patrons. In a slight change of tone before we start EN5ider's horror themed month for October and Halloween, we have a fun "drinking game" diversion from the serious rules, designed to throw some chaos into a special one-shot session or adventure. Five drinking games, and four recipes for fantasy themed drinks, three of which can be made alcohol free if needed, make this article one you'll remember! By Kiel Chenier; illustrated by Indi Martin.
I bought one of these years ago, back when they were called "GameMastery Combat Pads" (or something similar), and out of all the accessories I've ever bought outside of dice, I think this item has seen the most use. It's a magnetic pad used to track initiative; I've used it for D&D and Pathfinder, and any game with an initiative mechanic will benefit from it. The pad itself and the magnetic counters are all dry-erase, so you simply write PC and monster names on them along with their initiative rolls, and rearrange as appropriate. Generally, in my group, one of the players is designated as the initiative tracker so that the GM has one less thing to do. Anyhow, I didn't realise it had gone away - but now it's back in the Paizo store. If you don't have one, I recommend picking one up; they're $24.99, but they'll last you years.
A school in Cleveland is putting on a theatrical show which takes place just before the start of the Hell's Rebels adventure path. They're working with Paizo, and are holding a Kickstarter to create a professional DVD of production, which is called Night of Ashes. The Kickstarter only has three days left to go, though it has passed its funding goal; you get not only the DVD, but digital copies of the script and the character sheet of the main protagonist.
The sequel to TO SLAY A DRAGON is here! TO STAKE A VAMPIRE sees the heroes return, newly be-knighted, from their journey to slay the evil dragon Cirothe and rescue the captured Ariadne, only to find that things are not as they should be. What is causing this blight upon their idyllic county? The sequel to the acclaimed TO SLAY A DRAGON, this adventure can also be used as a standalone horror-themed adventure. Can the heroes uncover the cause of the curse, and defeat the evil infecting the land? A PATHFINDER ROLEPLAYING GAME adventure for 7th level characters.
How much of a D&D fan are you? Not as much as this guy, I'll warrant! D&D fan Sean Whissen has gotten the D&D ampersand tattooed onto his forearm. Sean posted this to Twitter with the caption "Check out my new ink!"
Exclusive for TRAILseeker patrons! Ki isn't just for monks - these new Pathfinder Roleplaying Game archetypes allow swashbucklers, rangers, paladins, and fighters access their inner ki in the form of the dojo slayer, mystic weaponsmith, spirit hunter, and youxia, along with four new feats and a selection of new ki powers. By Thiago Rosa; illustrated by Jacob Blackmon.
I don't usually report on dice Kickstarters, simply because there's a lot of them. It's not often that a major company is involved in one, though -- Q-Workshop has partnered with Paizo Publishing to produce what they have dubbed "the most awesome metal dice set on Earth". These are black painted, engraved, full-metal dice - the usual set (d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20, d10 with tens). A set will cost you $69, with free worldwide shipping, expected in March 2016; or, if you pay a bit more, you can get them in time for Christmas.
Jeremy Crawford's September Sage Advice column has appeared, and it deals with elven traces, thief features, various combat questions, plus a couple of queries about spells and scrolls. As usual, these questions and answers have also been added to the Sage Advice Compendium. "Elven Trance, spell scrolls, grappling, and other rules bits. This month, we touch on several rules questions that have come up quite a few times over the past year." (thanks to Ghost Matter for the scoop)

Salvatore, Perkins, & Mearls on Drizzt in RAGE OF DEMONS

There's a brand new video up from WotC in which author R.A. Salvatore and D&D designers Chris Perkins and Mike Mearls discuss the role of Drizzt Do'Urdeon in the Rage of Demons storyline. Note that some spoilers lie within! "Drizzt Do'urden, famed drow ranger and creation of R.A Salvatore, heads into the Underdark to hunt down the madness that threatens to bleed up to the surface world. In the process, he goes a little mad himself. R.A. Salvatore, Chris Perkins and Mike Mearls discuss Drizzt's path so far and hint at what the future might hold in the new Rage of Demons story."
