D&D 5E What Classes in PHB?

Ranger: Full-class. Pick "humanoid" special enemy. If you want to get that "arcane caster" element, take a level or two of an arcane class or a feat that grants spellcasting.

I sincerely hope that isn't how they do ranger. While the playtest version could use some sprucing up, the idea that your abilities favored attacking certain broad types of foes, rather than only worked against specific creature types, was a major improvement to me.

Old school favored enemy has the same problem that 3e sneak attack had--a class defining feature that didn't work on a large subset of foes.

I think the Cavalier can be duplicated by being a fighter that takes some feats designed for the Lance. There might not be any right of the bat, though.

Archer Fighters aren't really anymore strikery then Melee fighters.

And Avenger Paladins have a strong striker feel. But the truth is the 5e classes are less restricted by role tyen 4e.

The playtest had the right idea. Disguising fighting styles as "Favored Enemy" amounts to ostensibly honoring a (terrible)sacred cow whilst covertly cooking up some tasty hamburgers.

Everything I know about classes and their subclasses.

Barbarian
-Berserker, which is the most classic one
-Totem Warrior, which has a few mystical abilities related to certain animals

Bard
-Valor, a more fighter like Bard.
-Wit, the more trickstery type

Cleric
-Knowledge
-Life
-Light
-Nature
-Tempest
-Trickery
-War
-Death? Suggested it may be DMG only

Druid
-Circle of the Moon, wildshape focused
-Circle of the Land, spellcasting focused based based on terrain types

Fighter
-Champion, the most basic type
-Battlemaster, all about manuevers
-Eldritch Knight, has arcane spells
-Warlord? hinted at but never quite confirmed

Monk
-Way of the Open Hand, the classic Monk
-Way of the Four Elements

Paladin
-Cavalier (Devotion), the classic Paladin
-Avenger (Vengeance)
-Blackguard? May be in the DMG

Ranger
-Horde Breaker
-Colossus Slayer

Rogue
-Thief, classic Rogue
-Assassin
-Arcane Trickster, has some arcane spells

Sorcerer
-Dragon
-Wild Mage

Warlock (it's unclear if pact or type is the subclass)
-Tome, more spellcasting focused
-Chain (Binder), familiar focused
-Blade (Hexblade), weapon focused
Pacts are: Infernal, Fey and Star

Wizard
-Abjurer
-Conjurer
-Diviner
-Enchanter
-Evoker
-Illusionist
-Necromancer
-Transmuter

It was mentioned there may be a Warden subclass, which was a Paladin subclass at some point, but it may have moved elsewhere. There's an ever weaker mention of their possibly being a Shadowdancer subclass of Rogue.

Wait, there are going to be feats that grant spellcasting? Was this in the playtest?

Yes.

There were 3-ish feats for both arcane and divine casting. Each granted a low number of spells per day. The first was a couple of cantrips and 1 1st level spell I think.

Thaumaturge.

There's a single Magic Initiate feat that grants 2 cantrips and 1 level 1 spell. When you take the feat you choose which spellcasting class it applies to.

I think it's important to point out that that list was accurate as of mid-February (5 months ago now), and people in the know claimed there have been changes from since then. So, grain of salt and all that.
