Quarterstaff?

Grim Hawk

First Post
Just because it's a stick doesn't mean its bad! a rogue wielding two rapiers would be better off with a quarterstaff, same damage on each weapon, but the rapiers recieve a -2 for having a normal weapon as secondary.

BOW TO THE STICK!

You can treat your quarterstaff as a 2 handed weapon, which means that if you wanted to build a Str based Rogue with Power Attack, or someone who used two weapon fighting with a 2 handed weapon and armor spikes, you can now do so.

But the rules allow you to 2H a one handed weapon for 1.5x str bonus and 2x power attack anyway, so the club, also a free wooden stick you can pick up off the ground that deals d6 damage, can cover you for this purpose, and has the added advantage of a 10 ft range increment.

So all a quarterstaff is really good for is TWF.

A one-handed weapon wielded with two hands does indeed get 1½ Str damage. However, it only gets 1 for 1 on Power Attacks. Only two-handed weapons get 2 for 1.

Noob Questions

Hey I had some more noob questions and I thought I'd add em to this post rather than starting another.

1. If you wield a ranged weapon can you use if for melee attacks? (beat someone with a short bow) and if not can you make unarmed attacks at melee range? (while wielding a Ranged weapon)

2. Can you make unarmed attacks of opportunity? do they provoke another attack of opportunity from the original attacking party? (seems a little redundant doesn't it) and can it be done while wielding a ranged weapon?

3. The Katar or Punching Dagger also leaves me with questions: is it a zero handed weapon? can i be holding it at the same time as firing a bow? can I attack with no penalties while also wielding a bow? (keep in mind the bow is in my off-hand) When I kill someone with it will it be as cool as Assassin's Creed?

4. If i am the party's scout should i roll Listen/Spot/Move Silently Checks constantly? if not how would I account for them? if so how frequently should the checks be made?

5. On an un-related note, The 3.0 handbook mentions a partial charge as a partial action, what does this entail?

6. If I am a Rogue (Ranged Scout, you might be able to tell from previous questions XD) Do you personally think being a human is worth the extra feat? I don't think skill points will be too important for the campaign and I'm also considering Going elf.

7. If you have weapons hidden on your person before you are captured, how do you determine how easy they are to find? do you make sleight of hand checks when they search you?

8. I assume weapon finesse can be used on any weapon (but reading weapon descriptions sometimes makes me question it), why not have a melee rogue with a longsword? and If you do plan on being ranged, is it worth using up a feat to get weapon finesse on your secondary? (punching dagger/dagger/shortsword)

Thanks in advance for answering my questions! :)

1. If your DM says yes, sure, but probably with a -4 improvised weapon penalty. Otherwise, no.

2. No, you can not.

3. Qatars you actually have to hold with your hand. You punch people while holding them.

4. No, spot/listen etc, should be rolled occasionally, not all the time. If you make them all the time, it will cut into game time and immersion of other players, not to mention might anger the DM. You can always make a check if you want, but I wouldn't do it all the time.

5. Do not have a 3.0 handbook, sorry.

6. If you're a rogue, Skill Points should be one of your main concerns. the Rogue by definition is the skill monkey. Therefore, skills are always a priority for you. Humans are a viable choice for pretty much every class, but elf will help in many ways as well, for example, hidden doors.

7. You still have to make a SoH check to hide the item, maybe on the spot.

8. Weapon Finesse can only be used on light weapons. "light weapon, rapier, whip, or spiked chain made for a creature of your size category..." Sometimes in the weapon description it will allow it, like an Elven Thinblade.
that second part is totally up to you.

In my group we have 3 quarterstaves. The Druid uses hers as the staff she uses with Shillelagh, the Monk has a staff just because, and the Soulknife has a staff for when he's trying to avoid notice.

They rock.
