Your 4E edition failed. Why don't we ignore it? Dragonborn, blink elves and warlords might have something to do with that.

Heh. I haven't played 4e since 2009. I've been playing either Pathfinder or AD&D 2nd edition for the better part of three years. Nice try though.

I have no problem with warlords, dragonborn, or eladrin in concept, but the execution of them in 4e (and indeed much of 4e's ideas) ranged from boring to horrible. I await to see how they will be handled in 5e to see if they are handled better. However, I don't discount them out of hand any more than I would assassins, bards, monks, gnomes, or any of a dozen other D&D tropes that have worked their way into the game over 30+ years.

Remember the 10% rule, folks. If 10% of all players think having a gnome in the core is very important to them, then gnomes need to be supported.

Similarly, if 10% of all players want Vancian magic, it needs to be in the rules. And if 10% of all players want to play a warlord at some point, then it needs to be supported.

It's that simple.

I don't discount them out of hand either. They probably belong in a supplement somewhere, but not in the core, in the first PHB. They do not belong there, just as PC race mind flayers probably don't, and I like illithids. Don't want them popping up all over the place as part of a typical adventuring party or NPC though - PC illithids are nowhere near iconic enough for that.

So right now I think the class I'm most curious about is the Warlock. I was kind of intrigued by the all day caster design from 3.5 and I loved the flavor from 4e (I wish they had done more with the curse though). Anyway, though I'd dearly love to see the new take on Vancian casting for the Wizard, if someone told me I could look at one and only one new class from the current draft of the game I think it would have to be the Warlock.

I'm ambivalent on the warlord. I like the idea of the inspiring leader who lacks in raw damage dealing but is long on tactics, buffs, and bonuses. The name is probably the best we could get though; "marshal" or "tactician" are as lame as can be. My hope is that they remove (or seriously change) his "shout you better" powers. We'll see.

Eladrin are fine by me; I dislike a race that can naturally teleport every 5 minutes, but if that is fixed/removed I like the idea of a high/wood elf split.

Dragonborn are fine; I don't mind dragonmen. They aren't anything more than lizardmen with breath weapons.

At most, there will be 15 classes and 10 races (assuming every PHB1 class/race). The inclusion of dragonborn or warlords will be no different than having to houserule out gnomes in Mystara, paladins in Ravenloft, or any other "In my game..." BS.

Well, given that they are trying to bring in every PHB1 class, the 4e PHB Warlock will probably form the basis of the 5e version.

I would prefer a Vancian/daily Wizard, an at-will/encounter Sorcerer, with the Warlock being a midpoint between the two + a sweet curse mechanic.
