Hobgoblin are nasty of what i've seen in playtest! They fall easily when hit, but are hard to connect and hit like a truck. I also think Martial Advantage shows their discipline well by emphasing on cooperation for more combat effiiency.

What I find amusing is that if you defeat 3 hobgoblins you gain a level !

9 of them gets TWO levels. Did they increase the XP but forget to increase the XP requirement or is the actual intention to be WOW starter zone leveling where you run out 50 feet from your spawn point, kill a few beasties then suddenly >>>>>whoosh>>>> LEVEL 2!

Hehehehe...

An actual conversation over chat in Diablo 2:

Friend: Hey 'evile' why is your Barbarian just standing there getting wailed on?

Me: I dinged... hang on I'm almost done leveling up.

Friend: What? In the middle of... @&%$@ swarm!

It was fun to play the Endurance Barbarian... and I can see myself making that joke in the midst of 5e combat at least once... just for giggles.

Well, by yourself, yeah, good luck with that. :)

They did say they wanted L1 and L2 to go by in a session each, though.

I can see it now:

First level fighter runs into combat with 3 hobgoblins on his own.

"When I defeat you, I gain a level! Stupid designers!"

A round later, fighter lying dead on the ground, after having taken 14 damage in one hit from one of the hobgoblins with martial advantage.

Player: "Stupid designers!"

:)

Cheers!

From a D&D Q&A from a while back:

So a party of four 1st-level PCs would have a moderate-to-challenging fight with two hobgoblins.

Challenge rating is based on a party of that level. So, a 1st level PC party should have a fair fight against 2 hobgoblins.

Well, "fair" probably isn't right. "Dangerous, but not lethal" is more like it.
Ok, thanks for that clarification. So a CR of 1/4 means it takes 4 of that monster to create a moderate challenge for a party of four 1st level adventurers. So a CR of 1 would be a moderate challenge for a party of four 1st level adventurers...

What if the CR is 7? What does that mean?

What is the interaction between level and number of PCs and CR?

What if the CR is 7? What does that mean?

A dangerous, but not lethal fight for a party of 7th level characters.

I think CR is for eyeballing an appropriate challenge. When you start getting to balancing number of PCs and easy vs. medium vs. challenging encounters, you use the xp totals.
