D&D 5E No Magic Shops!

On the bright side, the more this thread derails the less likely it is to get back on track. Since that track was going nowhere, silver lining?

Rest in peace, No Magic Shops thread - I hope! And my condolences to the OP who merely asked whether anyone uses them, not to justify our positions.

Back on track then, my position, I'm sure I gave it earlier, and I'm not going to justify it, this is just personal preference.

I never DM a game which includes magic shops.

Not ever.

I don't want to play in a game that includes or expects 'magic markets', or even allows the items to be easily made.

I don't want rules to exist to allow for this playstyle. Not even optional rules. Sorry, to me those type of rules send the game in the wrong direction and give players seeds of expectation I don't want them to have.

Is this back on topic enough?

The idea doesn't need to be supported because it's true on its face.
And yet only you do. Could it be because items having a price does not automatically lead to player entitlement and pick-want-you-want-buffet magic item shopping? Could it be that's another of your unbased claims?

Umm, pick what you want magic buffet magic item shopping (excellent phrasing by the way) is PRECISELY what is being asked for here. That's 100% what CapnZapp has asked for. I'm not making this up. It's not unbased. You can read upthread, at the very least CapnZapp has been quite clear what he wants. Very refreshingly so.

If it's not for magic item shopping, then what is a new price list for? What purpose does it serve? Why do we need a new price list if these items are not going to be for sale to the PC's?

Better use for gold. More balanced distribution of magic items.

What is X item compared to Y item? Guidelines to that. Rules for that.
That doesn't mean players will suddenly be able to pick and choose at will. The DM will still be in full control over which items are available in a given shop, just like he controls what treasure gets found in loot. But, the GM can offer various items that the players are then forced to choose amongst (Player choice!Player agency), since they don't necessarily have the means to buy them all. A proper pricelist will help immensely in this regard.
None of this will force a rewrite of everthing.

Well, since the DM is controlling every single option of what you can buy, what difference does a new price list make? Why not simply use the price list we have now and allow the players to buy from the DM created list?

Because what we have now is totally whack, as have been demonstrated multiple times in this and other threads, and that we (the proponents) would expect WotC with their expertise and ressources to offer something useful, instead of leaving it to the single DM.

I sincerely hope that all the people I have told lately that D&D has changed and is cool and mainstream and fun never see the contents of this thread:lol::lol::lol:
