D&D 5E WotC Shares Theros Table of Contents

WotC has shared the table of contents of Mythic Odysseys of Theros. Well, part of it, at least. Update -- thanks to "obscureReviewer" on Twitter, here's a fuller image!

I find myself oddly convinced that I'd like to see more MtG planes rather than bothering with Kara Tur. I never thought I'd say that, not knowing much about them, but they sound like they cover a lot of ground. I'm not a very nostalgic personality, so I'm just as happy with something that's new (to me) and useful, compared with something I enjoyed as a youth. (I honestly barely remember Kara Tur, for that matter. Dark Sun, on the other hand...)

I really do not see why the hate on MTG setting as D&D setting. I was like that, once, but then they let out Amonkhet, Innistrad, Kaladesh and Ixalan. All had good idea and good potential. So when the Ravnica book got out, I decided to look at it. The store owner was kind enough to let me peruse the book before buying. After an hour and two read through (I read really fast) I decided to buy it. The guild approach to Ravnica is great and I wonder why it was not applied to factions like the Emerald enclave, The Lord's alliance and the others in FR (or any other setting for that matter).

So when I heard about Theros, my mind was already set. I will buy it.
As for a few questions/comments I saw in this thread...

A spear wielding fighter is easy to make. The battle master and champions are perfectly suited for this. No need for additional subclass (I allergic to too many subclasses, but I am not in any obligation to add them If I do not want them. The artificer was a new class, and as such, was really great. With what we have right now, we can do any concept we want so I would much prefer new options, rules, background etc...).

I want Greyhawk, but I will not balk at other books because of that. I think that keeping an open mind is the mark of a good DM. The only book I do not have bought (so far) is the Rick and Mortimer. It was not my cup of tea even after two full reading.

I kinda of regret that it is not the greek mythos that is in Theros but in this thread, someone was kind enough to remind us that it was possible to adjust them with the Olympian gods with ease. I wonder why I did not think of this myself.

I hope we will see rules for bronze weapons and armor. And even linothorax armor sets. I think we would see more medium armored characters with a relatively good dexterity in this setting and it would be a good thing to see. Currently, the medium armor aspect of the game is a bit meh but with the free godly gift (medium armor master?) a 16 dexterity medium armored spear fighter with shield can be fully functional and competitive. Maybe adding a new spear type. Short spear (1d6/1d8 two handed), Spear (1d8, one handed with reach) and the long spear (1d10, reach) all with their respective throwing range. (just an idea...)

I really hope to see better medusae, gorgons, chimeras and hydras as they are iconic of the Greek mythos.

I guess we'll have to get our hands on the book to see the goodies in it. ;)

Kamigawa? Dominaria? Phyrexia?
Phyrexia would be great, so would Kamigawa. But Phyrexia... a true cyberpunk horror in D&D! I would love it!

I agree, Kara Tur never seemed all that spectacular to me in that I found it to be a pretty generic asian style setting. A setting like Tarkir I think would have enough going for it that it could include mechanics that would fit well in a Kara Tur setting while releasing a unique and varied setting that a lot more people I think would enjoy.

Kara Tur was great and I had great fun in it. But a new setting might be in order.

Mystara, greyhawk, athas and more currently CAN NOT be satisfied by whats on the dms guild. Most of them arent open on dmsguikd or not nearly open up enough.

The (one of the) problem(s) with Kara-Tur is that it unnecessarily had two Chinas and two Japans to go with its Mongolia/northern steppes, Korea, Southest Asia, etc. and all of them with barely any serial numbers filed off. It was boring as [expletive deleted]. Added to that, it was wedded to the extremely Japan-centric rules of Oriental Adventures which just made things a mess.

The only things that I really miss from OA/Kara-Tur are hengeyoukai, korobokuru (which I'd retcon as a halfling sub-race), the some of the monsters.

Strange, I really liked Kara Tur. I found it to be well made and you could go in any direction with it without any trouble. Yes it was a bit too centered on Japan influence but who really cared at that time? Cultural appropriation was not a thing back then and no one was offended by it. By today's standards it would not be that great anymore but not because it was not well made, but because we get so easily offended... That is why a new generic setting would be better.

Excited for satyrs and anvilwroughts, curious about eidelons and athlete background, and kinda bummed we aren’t getting Dryads or anything similar.
