D&D 5E Booming Blade and Green-Flame Blade Nerfed in TCoE

if something duplicates effect of a spell should be similar enough.
But what about something that is not an exact duplicate? In English usage similar does not mean "the same". You might rule that any effect that modifies the effect of a spell is similar to twin spell.

I think they should have let them work with War Caster still. But the other changes I can totally see them not having realized and not wanting them to work.
I think that Booming Blade with War Caster might have been considered a problem, as it started to tread on Sentinel's turf. They trigger the AoO, then have to decide if they want to take the additional thunder damage (which they probably don't). Green Flame Blade might not have been an issue, but they would have to treat them the same.

You can't combine warcaster with GFB anyway, since it's not single target only. But I think you are right about Booming Blade and warcaster - this is intentionally disabled because of the logic issue - if the target stops moving because of the "on move" effect they shouldn't actually trigger the opportunity attack in the first place, since they are not passing out of reach. If the target can't choose to stop moving and the extra damage is triggered automatically, then it is very very overpowered.

There is clearly a desire for consistency across these spells as well. Sword Burst was errataed to self (5 feet) long ago, because the original wording implied that distant spell turned it from a 5' radius AoE into a 10' radius AoE.

Booming Blade, in the new format, can still be used with Warcaster.
A range of Self is not synonymous with a Target of self.

As has been pointed out on many different sites, the Lightning Bolt spell has a range of self, yet, you do not target yourself with the Lightning Bolt spell.

One subtle change, that I wish WOTC had made more explicit is one cannot combine Shadowblade with either Booming Blade or Greenflame Blade. BB and and GFB now require a weapon worth at least 1sp be used in with the cantrips.
A Shadowblade effect is monetarily worth nothing.

I think that is fairly explicit. It rules out any magically summoned weapon (which might include a warlock's pact weapon and some shillelaghs).

Naw, the shadowblade effect is worth 1 sp as soon as one of the other PCs offers to buy it for a sp.

Similarly, you can shut down the ability of an enemy wizard to use this spell by starting an auction for her sword, and having the high bid be 1 cp.

You know, the same trick you use with resurrection magic diamonds!

price =/= value

Well, considering so many people considered these vital in optimal builds, changes to them seems like an appropriate effort. Since I don't worry that much about optimization, I don't worry too much about what the specific changes might be/do/cause.
