The problem with the internet is that for every person making a joke like that, there's a person saying it 100% seriously and absolutely believing it. Given you were basically suggesting I'd made up the S-rank thing earlier it wasn't hard to imagine that you might also believe the internet thing.

I mean, jesus dude, I was speaking to a guy on reddit before who tried to tell me that the C in CRPG stood for "classic RPG", not "computer RPG", and that there weren't really any RPGs on computers before Baldur's Gate.

ROFL quite! It was just amazing, I was like, slack-jawed about the whole thing. This sort of thing happens pretty regularly, as some late teen or overconfident twenty-something blithely names a 1999 or 2004 or 2007 or whatever game as the game which "originated" an idea. Often they even get people agreeing with them before the mockery ensues.

I do have to admit, whilst it wasn't the first, it is odd how Hillsfar sticks in my mind as "early D&D RPG". There's something special about that game.

I think it was because it was so bad. It's the Plan Nine from Outer Space of D&D games.

That... may be sadly true. It was bad. But I dunno, I was like 10-11, and it seemed kind of amazing too, in that it had a lot more going on atmosphere-wise than some other games of the era. Of course Ultima 6 came out the next year and there's just no comparison, U6 is astonishing for its time.
