Not really impressed with the casting so far. I guess it doesn't really matter. DnD movie track record indicates this will likely be bad as well.

Even if there is zero Critical Roll connection, a villain like Trent Ikithon is very much someone I could see Hugh Grant doing and doing splendidly.

I so badly want to see Trent die horrifically I hate that guy.

Everyone expecting the D&D Movie being made to be Serious Business D&D are going to be very disappointed it is not Serious Business D&D. There is still very wide genre options for a great movie movie that is clearly D&D.

I can see a movie about a group of friends who gather to play the game where we see the characters in the real world, then it flashes into the world of the characters played by the same actors. With occasional shenanigans and moments the world of the characters stops while real world table discussions happen, or voice overlays from the table while the game characters are doing their thing. I see tons of opportunity and a chance such a movie would be a blast to watch, and be a movie franchise. And Hugh Grant being a villain would work.
That’s an idea that could either turn out amazing or horribly cringe, and probably won’t fall between those extremes.

Based on actor selection? Was LoTR full of better known/bigger actors when it was filmed? Actors you recognized sure, but no one was really A list back then. Not even Christopher Lee, Ian McCellen, Sean Bean, or others. None of them were really doing anything A list prior to 2000.
Ian McCellen and Christopher Lee were absolutely A-list at the time. John Rhys-Davies was up there. Sean Astin too. Sean Bean, Orlando bloom, and Elijah Wood less so, but they were hardly unknown. Vigo Mortensen was a bit of a left-field pick, but he was also not their first pick (that was Stuart Townsend, who looked like a rising star at the time.)

EDIT: Guess it depends what you mean by “A list.”

Back then it generally meant anyone getting around $20 million a movie. Maybe 10.

Generally meant you could carry a movie all by yourself or major star deserving that 10 or 20 million.

It was a big deal when stars got 20 million mid 90s or so. Inflation adjusted it's almost double that now.

No matter if someone agrees with the choice.
At least it shows that they are willing to put real money into the movie.
And this is a good thing.

I don't think Hugh Grant commands that sort of money.

But yeah they're throwing decent money at least at it. Casting in skill terms so far isn't a major problem.
