In Spelljammer, there were "oortlings," small humanoids with enormous brains that had been magically gengineered with limited intelligence that were used as a food source. Humanoid cows, effectively. It may be feasible to have non-Spelljamming mind flayers breed them.

Cats are not, in fact, evil. Many of the behaviors folks use to claim they are come from putting the cat in an environment that isn't reasonably suited to it. Basically, if you expect a cat to be a dog, you will have problems, yes, but they are hardly the cat's fault, as they aren't the ones with the thumbs in the relationship.

One of my favorite observations about cats is that, unlike dogs, they're far more willing to set limits and say no than dogs are. It's just that humans don't necessarily like respecting those limits, and then get annoyed when the cat walks away or scratches.

If nothing else the last few pages of conversation have birthed a new NPC for my campaign.

A neutral mind flayer who peacefully coexists with the village they live in because of a Ring of Sustenance but creeps the everliving scat out of everyone. And some stupid kid just stole their ring.

Man, I should NOT have used the word evil in my description there, should have known that would set off another round of the Alignment Wars (patent pending).

I've writing and re-written my feelings on the matter at least ten times now. But honestly. It's pointless to get riled up about what WotC does with Mindflayers. It's a single fragment of an IP owned by a corporation that will never directly impact what happens at my table. If they want to make the lovecraftian brain-eating horrors into more mass-consumer-friendly versions, that's not going negatively affect my life or the lives of other people one iota. I think it cheapens the concept, but it's not my IP, and I have zero stake in the game outside philosophical pondering.

My favorite cat trait is the fact I dont have to get out of bed earlier than I want to because they have to take a dump.

No. One that commits suicide is, but starvation is not mandatory.

(This comes up in the context of forms of vampires that have to kill their victim rather than just feed on them. The only moral choice is suicide at that point).

(Regarding the point about humans eating pigs, I think you can draw a pretty legitimate line of distinction between things that can have a conversation with you and things that can't.)

So survival is evil based on whether humans like how your biology works or not?
