The video below from Nerd Immersion delves into the races in more detail.

It has increased. It used to be that halflings moved 25, and now they move 30. By definition, it has increased. Why did they have a 25 in the first place? Because they were short, and it made sense to the designers for them to be a little slower. Why do they have a 30 now? Because the designers decided ease of use and not "punishing" players who want to play a short person was more important. That's all it is. But you cant say they didn't increase their speed.
What I meant is that--unless there's some flavor text in the upcoming book that actually says "these halflings are faster"--their speed has been changed, or even retconned, to 30 feet. They don't have a trait that gives them bonus speed.

But anyway, short legs giving slow speed doesn't make sense, considering that there are as many, or even more, Small and Tiny humanoids with 30 foot speed.

I honestly feel it would have been better to make all those other races move at 25 than to retcon two small PC races. I have a very hard time seeing someone the size of a toddler as physically proficient as an adult human as it is. The speed wasn't much, but it was a nod to reality in a game that sometimes takes too many breaks from it in the name of ease of use (and clearly intends to take more).

It also saves playtime, because you don'thaveto discuss why exactly 5ft of movement make a difference... (in Theater of mind at least).
In ToTM I am quite confident that pretty much all DMs ignore a 5ft speed difference, yes...

With a map, you instead always count each 5ft, there is no time-saving by making all races the same speed. Unless a player has a serious problem reading a character sheet.

(I am not saying that having different base speeds significantly enriches the game, but removing them sounds change for the sake of change, or worse... sounds like a hint of "badwrongfun" attitude)

I don't particularly care one or the other, but what if WotC has found that almost everyone is handwriting speed rules, as in your first paragraph? If they find people aren't using a rule, what use does it serve?

As we all know, polearms are an enormously complex variety of weapons, but 5E flattens this considerably....because if what they have found people will actually use st most tables.

No, there is no point anymore. And as species no longer have different heights and weights halflings can be six feet tall. 🤷

I really don’t like this. I want the size to matter more, not less.
Size barely matters in the base 5e game. It's an understandable preference to want size to matter more, but 5e seems designed around streamlining mundane differences and accentuating fantastical differences (like per rest abilities).

RE: Size and speed for mammals.

Note the axes are on log scales. Looks pretty flat in the range where most humanoids are.

Do you play 5e? If so why, as opposed to almost any other edition that is more concerned with simulation?

1e and 2e don't have enough options
3.5/PF were a bit too crunchy in parts and I don't like the unboundedness at higher levels
4e isn't something I liked
... and none of my friends who play the lottery have won it and given me the money to go into full time game design (and even more money to hire competent people to make sure my vision didn't suck)

That's a possibility, but at least they could tell us... and honestly I don't believe that many groups using non-TotM combats default to equal speed to all.

But then, would you want to remove spells components, ammunition rules, mundane items prices and such on the ground that the majority handwaves these too? I would rather mark them "optional" than removing diversity entirely.
