The video below from Nerd Immersion delves into the races in more detail.

Do you play 5e? If so why, as opposed to almost any other edition that is more concerned with simulation?
The same reason a lot of people play 5e: more people are aware of and want to play it than any other fantasy rpg, and most people are resistant to learning new games. If I had my way, I'd play my retro clone of choice, or maybe 2nd ed (probably the retro clone with 2e's lore). But instead I hack 5e to my liking because that's what you have to do.

I don't particularly care one or the other, but what if WotC has found that almost everyone is handwriting speed rules, as in your first paragraph? If they find people aren't using a rule, what use does it serve?

As we all know, polearms are an enormously complex variety of weapons, but 5E flattens this considerably....because if what they have found people will actually use st most tables.
Bah! That's why AD&D 1e is best. You have rules that properly account for a gnome weilding a hook-fauchard and wearing fairly
bulky armor. Just, for the love of Boccob, please do not tie your initiative roll!

1 forget elf because I said human as the base... and 2 how does a human get advantage on a non living target regularly? (I think a rogue/fighter multi class is best here to give archery fighting style +2 and steady aim bonus action but not sure what you are thinking of)
Because it is unconscious by definition.

If players can decide if their character is medium or small at chargen, that would allow for a lot of age-based size variations. How many stories have kid adventurers who are successful because they're small, quick, skinny, can feign innocence easily, etc?
back in 3e we had a player make a 9year old sorcerer who took mostly summoning spells and was basicly an anime character (Pokemon/yugioh/digimon) so I am cool with it...but that would (if you stick to raw) need to say all races can lower 1 size catagory for kids...

The standard combat movement rate assumes the character is doing things like paying attention, trying not to be stabbed or shot, and looking for opportunities to attack, right?

A median 9yo human is a lot bigger than a halfling aren't they? (Median 53" if I read the table right). Is that medium or small?

I don't know. D&D combat is weird you have 360 vision and can react and defend as well against the 7th attack as the first (in 6 seconds) and if me and you both start next to each other you move 25 ft, then the mage casts fireball, then I move 25ft next to you we might not be in fireball range at same time (cause we wait and do nothing until out turn) so who knows...
