But they don't sneak into your house and steal your old books away, and they don't stop fandom wikis from listing the old material. All they do is produce new stuff that's different. All the old stuff is still there.
They should produce new stuff that's different...in a different setting, with a different name. And just let Dragonlance and all the other problematic settings of the past go.

Yes?

Different stuff with different contexts, provides a different tone and setting.

I have a soft spot for two 2e settings, Ravenloft and Dragonlance - the butchering of the first has led me to not get my hopes up for the second. It’s WotC’s property they can do what they want, but ultimately I would’ve preferred they just be left alone and the designers build new things rather than go and trash what remains. All in all…

Why should they? They would just be competing with or copying from themselves, and they'd be ignoring a setting that a lot of people like. Plus, it's their setting; why shouldn't they change it? The old settings are stale and need new life in them. Otherwise, they'll die out completely.

So if you want the old context, you already have it. The only change you'd have to make is if you're playing with people who don't know the old setting.

I just see no value in using an old setting they're going to have to major changes to in order for it to sit well with the new players they care about when they can build a new setting that does exactly what they want and not have to worry about any of that. 4e did it, and even people who didn't like the game seemed to be cool with Nentil Vale.
