D&D (2024) New One D&D Weapons Table Shows 'Mastery' Traits

The weapons table from the upcoming Unearthed Arcana playtest for One D&D has made its way onto the internet via Indestructoboy on Twitter, and reveals some new mechanics. The mastery traits include Nick, Slow, Puncture, Flex, Cleave, Topple, Graze, and Push. These traits are accessible by the warrior classes.

I will agree it’s a tough problem.

We've got more than 4,000 years of "martials with superpowers" to look at. Any problem is entirely caused by a refusal to allow any of them to be used.

That's...pretty superheroic. That plot armor, and the ability to lay out that much damage, is very much in the MCU arena. Hawkeye, Black Widow, Black Panther, etc.
Casters also get that. Plus a wide range of actually superpowerful abilities.

My point is that no one plays baseline D&D except "noobs" and "babies".
I . . . see.
Which would you characterise me as?

Everyone gets superheroic plot armour however. Not just martials. They don't have even the other capabilities of Hawkeye, Black Widow, or Black Panther either.

So give fighters magic.

WHAT?!?

You heard me. People keep complaining that casters get all the kewl effects, while martials get mundane abilities. So let them use magic. Not spells, of course. Monks don't use spells but they're magical. Barbarian rage borders on magic when you're taking half damage from everything. Heck, a fighter can self heal and act twice in the same round, that's a good foundation for tapping into magical abilities. Rip the band-aid off, say a fighter taps into latent magical power though training and fitness (cf Street Fighter, where nobody questions how an Air Force commander can throw sonic booms) and let them get the supernatural abilities people want. Let them jump hundreds of feet. Let them reduce all damage taken in one round to 0, let them scream the doors off their hinges. Let them swim up waterfalls or suplex dragons. Reframe the narrative that everyone has some form of access to magic, be it spirit points, rage, bardic inspiration, channel divinity, invocations, spellcasting, or Muscle Power!
