D&D General If faith in yourself is enough to get power, do we need Wizards and Warlocks etc?

While I prefer the deity divine connection, other options are a legitimate choice. I could see a Zen like character who gets their powers via their greater understanding of the universe. Or perhaps something like a Pythagorean who gets divine powers and the ability to do geometry?

But you are putting yourself as the arbiter of what "makes sense". So it is still to satisfy you.
Actually, I am putting the creators of old school D&D as the arbiters of what makes sense in D&D. Other explanations are definitely possible, but IMO they should be used for other classes or in other games.

I'm glad you found a way to tell good stories with the investiture narrative, but I've always hated it, and seen it as nothing more than the designers providing player entitlement to those who want the kewl powers but no responsibility.
Conversely:

DMs getting to pull the plug whenever they want are wanting to have total control with no responsibility. Gods that can toy with mortals at their leisure.

Two can play at this game.
