Well, um, Jurassic Park came out 31 years ago. Not so secret where he got the idea from. Heck, someone born that year could be a scientist doing it now. ;)
Right, I want the behind the scenes TV series of what's going on behind the movie. :)

Edit: We just saw the original last week on a not-quite-full theatre size screen with the symphony doing the soundtrack live.

The clawed frog xenopus (Xenopus - Wikipedia) is actually an extremely common animal used to study genetics. Other common species used in genetic research include c elegans worms, drosophila (fruit flies), and zebra fish. If you were doing basic background research in the late 80s to invent some sci-fi geneticists studying lizards, xenopus ostensibly seems like a pretty obvious point to start from.

I thought in the movie they even mentioned birds being descended from dinosaurs. (Although I guess it was a fairly new idea the ).

I'm just saying it's a nod towards realism in the research. Frog DNA is a DNA you could expect the scientists to know and have easy access to. Bird DNA is no where near as well known, then or today.

Remember, the scientists in Jurassic Park were also accused of not really doing their own research, just standing on the shoulders of giants (not to say I completely agree with that assessment). Sequencing/studying the bird DNA for the dinosaurs would have been decades of independent research. But choosing xenopus as a basis is using the information commonly available in the field, and just taking the one step over to dinosaurs.

The comedy short about it could have the main Seinfeld cast working their semi-competently, but then all quitting when the no computer guy is hired.
That could work. I was thinking more along the lines of the experimentations going awry. Like using cat DNA and then ending up with a 4 legged velocicator with a tail, cat eyes and which tends to pounce on moving beads of light putting them back to square one on what DNA to use.

Yeah, it's a plot point in the novel - part of the reason why Nedry got so screwed on his computer systems contract. They started out thinking they needed to sequence lizard DNA, but then realised early on that what they were sequencing was actually more like bird DNA, which required different, more expensive computers that Nedry got stuck with the bill for.

Is there some way the population crash due to lower reproductive rates and aging populations can replace the need for a 30 years war or plague?
