If a duel lance was actually effective, why not have a lance that splits into multiple prongs?
The attitude where if you add "magic" then there are no limits to the cool things you can do. But without that secret word, you're not allowed.

Jump 40' to hit a dragon? Nope, breaks simulationist verisimilitude, and you would take fall damage.

Magic jump 40' to hit a dragon? Of course, it's a fantasy game. Have fun.

It's not magic though, is it? It's a non-magical lance. So we can assume it behaves like a real world lance*. So, holding two lances (perfectly possible) isn't done because it make the weapon LESS affective, just as a lance with multiple points is less effective than a lance with one.

*if we can't make this kind of assumption, then we cannot assume gravity works, so all characters are permanently immobilised since they can't generate friction with the ground. Some things are magic, some things are not magic, and work pretty much as you would expect them to work in the real world.

Sure it is. Magic does what you would expect it to, but using two lances isn’t magic, and is possible, but would be less effective than using one (halves the impact pressure).

I don't know that healing yourself with a short rest is considered magic, but I will rephrase.

Dual wielding lances is no more silly than a Gnome riding on an Owlbear.

My point is we are willing to suspend disbelief for all sorts of things, but wielding 2 lances is what is what we are deciding to draw the line on?

I'm really glad they switched lances to two-handed as the base; it just fits the fantasy of big dang hit so much better.

I'm sure at some point in history a knight rode into a tourney with two lances, said the local equivalent of "Yo! Check this out!" and proceeded to spear two apples at the same time... but I didn't like the fact that this was an option and impaling someone for poleaxe-tier damage was not.

No it does not. You have to attack with a light weapon to use the bonus attack of the dual wielding feat.

Two lances, or two longswords, or two flails is not a thing any more (at least when it comes to making a bonus action attack).

It was never a thing in5e. You always needed light weapons

The difference is, fighting with two lances is something that could be done in the real world, but wasn’t because it was objectively bad, whereas a gnome riding an owlbear makes perfect sense in a world where gnomes and owlbears exist.

Magic can make the impossible possible, but it can’t make the possible-but-bad good.
