Captain America: Brave New World - Official Trailer (2025)

At the end all of his gear didn't mean anything against the Red Hulk. He fell back on what he started as and what Steve saw in him- his empathy and his ability to be a counselor.

Yeah, but that's hardly the routine situation he finds himself in; even when he attempts it it doesn't always work (see: Karli Morgenthau). He wears a lot of hats in that role.

I think using success and failure to define someone's strengths is why we have the Peter Principle. His successes and failures weren't the reason that Steve chose him- it was because of his potential and strengths. Whether he leverages those are beside the point and up to his decisions.

I don't disagree. My only argument was that he also does a lot of things that his gear very much matters for; he's not a hostage negotiator.

Oh, I don't disagree either. But anyone could be trained for those. I mean, look at Falcon and US Agent. His pathos and empathy can't really be trained as easily, and are just inbuilt qualities.
It’s kind of interesting that national militaries in the MCU do have specialised units using or used to encountering super-tech. It’s of course established that Sam himself was a USAF pararescue jumper medic using a winged flight harness designed by Stark Industries, which probably means that the US military (and most other militaries with the money) have similar units with different functions. Walker was special forces but apparently completely fine with using the shield, which is presumably not normal Army Ranger gear.

Now that we’ve seen that the falcon gear performs at a level matching that of modern fighter aircraft, it seems very likely that in the MCU there are Russian, Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean, Indian, Japanese, French etc units using similar gear. Of course we won’t see them unless the plot demands it in a future film, but it’s still interesting to speculate.

Saw it last night.

I enjoyed it. It's a solid, middle range Marvel movie. (Most of them are.)

Anthony Mackie is always very likeable. And he had a good supporting cast.

Overall it didn't do a great job of building suspense. Which is a let down for something that's supposed to be an MCU version of a spy thriller.

It may just be me, but I would have liked for Tim Blake Nelson break out singing "Man of Constant Sorrow" when explaining his imprisonment.

Assuming it isn't significantly more expensive than said fighter aircraft.

I would think it would be. And more difficult to train with more casualties in training. It has been said that Falcon has borderline superhuman reflexes, the adjustments and reactions he has to make when flying at speed. They make it look easy, but the comics have made sure to emphasize the fact that it is very difficult.

I think the main thing is that Sam is extremely experienced in using the flight harness, but he was also part of an entire USAF PJ unit using them at least a decade before this film. Assuming he’s not the only survivor, and they weren’t the only unit, there must have been at least dozens of such operators and dozens of such harnesses, which have only got more advanced in the last decade.

How expensive are they? Who knows, but Torres got one*, no questions asked, just because he’s a promising young USAF officer who’s Cap’s best pal. He’s not a superhero, we have no reason to think he’s unique or even exceptional, he’s just a great pilot and hacker.

*Torres says “I make your old suit look good” but since Sam’s last suit got wrecked in FatWS and it didn’t look much like the one Torres has, I’m going to assume it’s a similar model and not the same one.
