D&D 5E (2024) Avatar of Bane 2.0. BG 3.5 Themed Game

CR24 red dragon only does 146 avg damage, and dragons tend to be high damage. Your doing 252 avg damage.
The 5e24 red (also CR 24) has a DPR of 205. So this is not that far off. Did you use old or new CR guidelines in your analysis?

OK, so I just checked and I am getting around a CR 21-22 (@ 252 DPR - I didn't check that) with the new CR rules.

Yes I found my mistake. Where are the new CR calculations found, I have not seen any formal new rules for them in 2024, just the ones 3rd parties have made by extrapolating monster data.

There are no formal rules. I just did what you described, as many others have done. I created a spreadsheet with all the 2014 & 2024 MM monsters and compared the CR based on the 2014 rules and then looked for the delta with the actual 2024 MM CR. I came up with basically the same results as Alphastream and Paul Hughes. They have much better and indepth articles on it so I didn't see a need to post anything myself.

I did plan on updating my CR calculator to match the new guidelines, but ultimately I have decided to stop using CR and instead create monsters by level.

Xan you check the CR8 5.5 assassin and see what your calculator suggests.

5.0 one was a complete joke I had lvl 8 PCs defeat CR21.

I am not sure what you are asking, but the 5e24 assassin (CR 8) would be CR 10.5 by the 2014 CR guide. On the other hand, the 5e14 assassin is a CR 6.5 per the 2014 CR guide. So the assassin jumped from an effective CR 6.5 to 10.5 in 5e24.

It really depends on the group. For most of the people I play with the 5e14 monsters worked just fine. I could have easily had TPKs if I has chosen to be an aggressive DM. The issue, IMO, is not the CR calculator / ranking, but the encounter building guide. There is no guidance for how to adjust an encounter (or monster) difficult for different types of groups.

My bhaal obe in trying to tweak the assassin to CR 13.

This one I'm using the archpriest as a template. That's CR12. I tweaked the spell list slightly. Im comparing my version to things I've CR 17 deathknight, CR21 Arch hag. Think mines weaker than both.
