D&D 5E Out of the Abyss IC

Round 1

Brinn scaled the rock wall to attain the ledge. Kuo-toa 1 was no longer in sight; once he gained the ledge, Brinn spied a fold in the rock with a narrow set of stone steps leading down the backside to the cavern floor. Brinn trounced on the kuo-toa monitor and commenced pummeling it, dealing 9 points of damage with Other Fist and a kick. Brinn tried to toss the monitor to the cavern floor, but failed; the creature dug in its webbed feet and held its ground, against even Brinn's finishing kick.

From down below, Solace fired a crossbow bolt at the kuo-toa monitor, but missed. The creature was overwhelmed trying to deal with Brinn and appeared not to have noticed her. She once again pressed herself against the rock and re-attempted to hide.

Despite the distraction of the fire and the ensuing chaos, Kamael handily maintained focus on his spell. By his reckoning, the spell would end in another few seconds, but it ought to hold just a bit more. Stomp as he might try, the griffon grease-coated items in the bundle of rags continued burning merrily. Something more would be needed to put out the fire.

The kuo-toa monitor dropped its trident at its feet and sealed the webbing of its frog hands around meaty fists. The creature drew itself up to its full height; it stood a good four inches taller than Brinn. With a hiss, the monitor lunged at Brinn, biting him for 6 points of damage. The monitor's teeth were sharp and sank deeply into Brinn's forearm. It followed with a right hook that connected critically with Brinn's temple, dealing an intense amount of blinding pain and another 18 points of damage. Lightening flashed all around the angry kuo-toa monitor, some of it channeled into the creature's attack on Brinn. Shuushar winced.

Kago noticed several of the kuo-toa guards beyond Kamael's flame had shifted position; he could no longer see three of them after they darted to the east. The other three remained huddled in a cluster just beyond the bonfire.

OOC: Kuo-toa 1 disappeared from the ledge in post #627. I'd been relying on a prior map that continued to show Kuo-toa 1 as still on the ledge, so it's easy to see why you'd think it was there. The monitor's right hook was a critical hit on Brinn, who should now be at 7/31 hp, lowkey13. Some of the damage was lightning damage, the effect of which is to rob Brinn of his ability to take reactions until the end of the kuo-toa monitor's next turn. Kago's turn, industrygothica. Yavathol, create bonfire will end at the end of Round 1.

Kago takes a step back for a better vantage point and launches a spell at the monitor in an attempt to finish it off before the others break through the sorcerer's flames.

A flash of heat and light streaked from Kago, missing the kuo-toa monitor and hitting the back wall.

OOC: Start of Round 2. Raza's up GlassEye!

Shuushar stayed put. He winced when the kuo-toa monitor pummeled Brinn. Turvey has been trying to help Raza stomp out the fire, to no avail. Stool and Jimjar have not been seen since before the encounter began.

Raza Thulcandra

'Let it burn,' the voice whispered in Raza's mind. She turned away from the bag and its contents; though they might have been useful, they were unimportant. Raza stepped to Kamael's side and summoned fire into the palm of her hand. With a single swift motion she threw the fire at the kuo-toa on the ledge.

"Burn," she muttered.

Round 2

Kamael's bonfire sputtered, then vanished. No obstacle now stood between Kago and the kuo-toa further to the west in the passageway. All went dark. A beat later, however, there was a flash of dim light coming from the wizened Halfling woman. Raza, who'd stepped forward to submit to the kuo-toa earlier, conjured flame in her open palm. She flicked it at the kuo-toa monitor on the ledge, missing. Her glob of fire splashed against the rock wall, once again sending the cavern into darkness.

The darkness was a foil to Brinn's effectiveness. Still, he soldiered on, unwilling to let mere lack of sight prevail. His first fist missed. Other Fist, however, was more effective; Brinn connected with the monitor, dealing 4 points of damage. Brinn finished with a sweeping kick that struck true, dealing another 7 points of damage. Brinn dealt the combination punch and kick with enough force to push the kuo-toa monitor off the ledge onto the sandstone floor. The creature landed prone at the base of the ledge.

OOC: Expended 1 ki point to attack with flurry. Even with disadvantage on each of his three attacks, Brinn still managed to connect twice. Impressive. Solace is up, Kobold Stew!

The darkness engulfing the cavern means that Solace is no longer hiding in shadows, she is simply standing next to a wall.

She reaches out, can casts a light cantrip to restore some illumination, her hand slapping against the moist basalt of the chamber wall as she does so. From beneath the ledge, the light creates tall shadows that stretch out the combatants in ungainly, monstrous shapes.

Her act covers her in light, of course, and so she scampers up the ledge to where she had first seen the lone guard standing, and assesses her situation.

OOC: Action: cast light.
Bonus action (if creature at J10 is hostile): disengage (cunning action).
Move: climb up to K12.
Bonus action (if creature at J10 is not hostile): hide in tall shadows (cunning action). [roll0].

Solace cast light on the rock wall of the chamber, then clambered up the ledge to join Brinn. She, too, quickly discerned a fold in the rock leading to steps down. The steps seemed to head back toward the cavern floor; they weren't very long, but were rather steep. Both Solace and Brinn spotted the three kuo-toa at the base of the stairs. Brinn called out to the group with a disapproving grunt, "Three more down here." He pointed at the fold in the rock and the stairs.

OOC: Some corrections to the map: 1) the bonfire in F12 is not there anymore, and I ought to have removed it before posting the last map (sorry); 2) the "creature" in J10 is not a creature but instead is the burning bundle of rags dropped by Raza (hard to make out on the smaller scale of the map, but it's a fire (I didn't want another bonfire icon like the one I used for Kamael's bonfire spell because I thought that might be confusing)); and 3) Solace is now in K12. Kamael's turn, Yavathol!

Sighing at the needless bloodshed, Kamael channelled his arcane power in a manner that he hoped would minimize fatalities. "Can we try and knock them out, and avoid killing them? It's not like they're evil, just protecting their home!"

A hand emerged from the ground next to the cluster of guards, formed of earth and stone. Moving with surprising speed, it reached out and tried to grab one of the kuo-toa!

OOC:
Cast Maximilian's Earthen Grasp at E13. Kuo-toa at F13 please make a Strength save DC 14 or take damage and be restrained. CB, can I make the damage non-lethal? Need to look up when I get home if that will work with this spell!
