Watched it last night with my brother, and overall was disappointed.
I enjoyed Falcon and Winter Soldier, though I felt like it made a couple of significant missteps, and with the CA2: Winter Soldier spy vibes this one gave off a bit of, I had hopes it would follow in that one's footsteps, as one of the best MCU movies.
Unfortunately I felt like the writing on this one REALLY let it down. Substantially more plot holes than normal. A bad supergenius villain (who could have been a good change of pace if it was well-written). All of these characters deserved better, and I can see some elements of a genuinely good movie in here, but this wasn't it. Mackie and Ramirez have good charisma and chemistry as heroes, but Esposito, Ford and Lumbly were really wasted. Isaiah in particular was one of the high points of F&WS, and while Lumbly's characterization remained solid and at times moving, so much better could have been done with Isaiah as a moral anchor and embodiment of the central conflict with a black CA. Ford was also distractingly aged and fragile; Hurt (RIP) would definitely have been better in the role. Even Tim Blake Nelson, who I usually love, was struggling under the bad material. The Celestial Island/dogfighting sequence was some pretty good action cinema, but there wasn't enough spectacle to overcome the writing.
What is it that Stern is referring to in the credits scene? Avengers: Doomsday? Something else?
Yes, and no doubt the upcoming Fantastic Four movie, which also involves people travelling from alternate universes.
I liked Solo better than this.
Me too.
