D&D General What Are Dragonlance's Weis & Hickman, and Actor Manganiello Cooking Up?

Authors and actor post "Something is coming..."
Actor and D&D superfan Joe Manganiello and Dragonlance co-author Tracy Hickman have both posted a cryptic image on their respective social medias showing themselves, along with Margaret Weis standing together in front of a large dragon statue at Wizards of the Coast's offices in Renton, Washington.

Hickman's image was accompanied by the words "Something is coming...", and in Manganiello's case "WE'RE BACK", to which Wizards of the Coast replied "Welcome back to the table!" A later photograph from Weis also included Laura Hickman and Dan Ayoub, who was named head of Dungeons & Dragons back in July of this year.

The posts have sparked speculation as to what they might mean, with guesses ranging from a revival of Manganiello's Dragonlance TV show project--which was no longer in development after he stated in February 2024 that "Dragonlance is not a property WotC are interested in developing further currently"--to a new Dragonlance-based D&D adventure.

Weis and Hickman co-wrote a new Dragonlance trilogy in recent years following a legal dust-up with Wizards of the Coast which was ultimately dismissed without prejudice, so it would seem that any bad blood from the dispute has been left in the past.

The question now remains--what are they all cooking up this time?

Idris Elba was great in the MCU Thor movies despite not matching most pre-MCU visual depictions of Heimdall - probably my favorite MCU Asgardian overall

Pity that Thanos killed him =(

There's also something like 200 years of black Shakespeare productions at this point. Idris Elba once talked about how Shakespeare is a requirement to be taken seriously in British theater. It might not hurt for someone convinced a non-white actor will ruin their fave to start watching some of these productions. The viewer might actually find their new favorite version of a character, if they dared open themselves to the idea.

If you're polymorphed into something, you really ought to look like that something and not something else.
and yet it was clearly pointed out that she did not. So what should she look like, just like the others or with the features mentioned that make her stand out…

What I'm trying to get across is why would anyone think that she's a Kargonesti elf if she doesn't look like a Kargonesti. Oh yeah, this chick that I'm spying on while she bathing, she must totally be a Kargonesti even though she looks like something else entirely.

I guess because she still looks similar enough, an albino black person still has recognizably black features, they do not look white. Do the Kagonesti wonder about her?

No, it’s not. The only thing that’s clearly pointed out in the book is that Laurana is the only non-Kagonesti elf Silvara has met who knows that her name means “silver-haired”. (Yeah, it’s kind of a no-brainer to the reader, but that’s beside the point.)

No one else seems to remark on her hair color or find anything about her as being unusual. The other, real Kagonesti aren’t shown to treat her with any deference. Theros doesn’t know there’s anything special about her. Her silver hair is a clue to the reader but not really to anyone else.

So I think it’s fair to assume that she looks like a typical Kagonesti elf.

ok, that leaves two options, 1) the Kagonesti are tolerant about looks, 2) she just does not look all that different. The latter throws a wrench in your
Silvara has unusual silver hair, blue eyes, and dirty skin. She's always depicted as white, but since the Kaganesti are even more Native American-coded than the Plainsfolk are, you'd think her skin would be more reddish-brown.

So I think it’s fair to assume that she looks like a typical Kagonesti elf.
make up your mind, does she look unusual or not, and if not, wouldn’t that mean the ‘other’ Kagonesti would look more like her rather than the other way around? We know what she looks like after all…

Here's the thing about the whole "they are described as white in the original texts" argument. Old books traditionally were not great at inclusivity (because the framework, the language for it, just wasn't as widely adopted). Dragonlance has a cast of hundreds, yet how many people of color are depicted? How many queer characters? Current media should reflect the diverse world we live in. To wit, things need to change when we adapt older works. And it is entirely possible to do so while still respecting the core of the works and its characters.

Sorry, I didn’t word my description clearly. I meant her hair color only was unusual (unusual in the sense that she’s named for it). Her blue eyes may or may not be unusual.

And when I said she was usually depicted as white, I meant by Elmore, Caldwell, and the other artists. They basically always portrayed her as a white Native American (just like Goldmoon).

Here’s Elmore’s depiction. Note that her skimpy outfit does not match the description of her clothing in the book. (For one thing, she’s supposed to be wearing pants!)
