"1st Edition Rules, 4th Edition Feel"?

James, I'm not assuming the certainty of it, but rather the possibility of it. It'll be good to have some ideas for how to make 1st edition more enjoyable for them if stuff such as level drain, character deaths, etc. are game-breakers for them.

1st level to begin with, then upwards.

"1st Edition Rules, 4th Edition Feel"?

I'm not interested in using modules. I'm interested in making my own 1st edition AD&D adventure that will be used with players whose only RPG experience is with 4th edition D&D.

"1st Edition Rules, 4th Edition Feel"?

Let's say that a DM wanted to make a D&D adventure using either the 1st edition AD&D rules, or the rules in the 1981 D&D Basic book (edited by Moldvay) and in the 1981 D&D Expert book (edited by Cook). Further, let's say that the players all had experience only with 4th edition D&D. What simple...

Do I have the probabilities right?

Please be patient with me, as I've never played 4E. I've only studied the PHB, DMG, and MM. Let's say that a deathjump spider (MM, page 246) bit your character. He would take 2d6 + 3 damage. Each round thereafter your character would be in danger taking 5 more points of poison damage. To avoid...

    What is OSR about?

I like what Robert Conley says: "To me the Old School Renaissance is not about playing a particular set of rules in a particular way, the dungeon crawl. It about going back to the roots of our hobby and see what we could do differently. What avenues were not explored because of the commercial...

Are the DMG, the MM, and/or minis necessary?

Thanks to all for your replies. I'm understanding that some sort of 4E monster book would be valuable for me so that I could see how to properly design 4E monsters. So, instead of a Monster Manual, what if I got this Lovecraftian Bestiary instead? Critter Cache 6: Lovecraftian Bestiary -...

Are the DMG, the MM, and/or minis necessary?

Why does the system discourage the PCs from fighting NPCs? How would this be sub-optimal? If my questions seem ignorant, it's because I am 99% ignorant of 4th Edition D&D.

Are the DMG, the MM, and/or minis necessary?

I'm wondering about a campaign in which: about 70% of those the PCs fight against are humans about 30% of those the PCs fight against are unique monsters created by the DM Could a DM with nothing more than the PHB, dice, and pen and paper accomplish that?

Are the DMG, the MM, and/or minis necessary?

Can a DM run a 4th Edition D&D campaign with NO equipment other than the Players Handbook, a set of dice, and pencil and paper? (edited for clarity)

    PHB errors and reprint schedule

Whoosh! Over my head. In regards to the Empire of the Petal Throne rulebook: The pages are densely packed with information, with plenty of numbers, charts, etc. There is fertile ground there for loads of errors. But I've never found one. The question remains: What was TSR doing right in 1975...

    PHB errors and reprint schedule

The amount of errata in RPG books is ridiculous. At the dawn of RPGs in 1975, the 100ish-page Empire of the Petal Throne rulebook was released free of errors, as far as I can tell. Now, in an age of inexpensive computers, rulebooks are riddled with errors. Game companies should throw away all...

Rod of Seven Parts novel by Douglas Niles

I found this in my basement. Does anyone have any thoughts on it? Does it follow the 2nd edition AD&D adventure of the same name, or is it its own thing?

BECMI vs Rules Cyclopedia vs Castles & Crusades

I suggest the Basic D&D rulebook edited by J. Eric Holmes in 1977/78. That 46-page rulebook is all you need: http://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=27128

    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

Gary, I recently read this article about you: http://www.believermag.com/issues/200609/?read=article_lafarge I particularly liked this part: 'He [Ernst Gygax] was, Gygax says, an attentive father, and he must have been a permissive father also, because Gygax’s childhood was marked by a...

    Best Low Magic System ?

If you want to go old-school and few rules, try using the 1978 Basic D&D rulebook edited by J. Eric Holmes. It's only 46 pages, and character levels are 1-3. I plan on using it for my next campaign. A 3rd-level cap on both PCs and NPCs will definitely make things "low magic" compared to playing...
