D&D 5E 3 of my friends have not played D&D, and are about to in a few weeks

I was sitting around thinking I wanted to get 3 of my friends together who have never played D&D, and run a game with them. I want to record their experience, and chop it up into episodes to see how it turns out.

I pitched to them that I would run a one-shot D&D campaign if they are interested, and that I would create the characters for them.

I also gave each player the option of rolling their own dice rolls, or having me roll their rolls.

Now mind you, none of these guys (ages 32-34) know what D&D is, but might have heard of it.

I explained the classes to them, and let them choose their own class. For everything else, such as race & background, I chose Human for them all, and made custom backgrounds for them.

This is the way I displayed the class options to them -
  1. Barbarian (Beserker)
  2. Bard (Performer, Jack-of-all-Trades)
  3. Cleric (Priest)
  4. Druid (Nature Priest)
  5. Fighter (Warrior)
  6. Monk (Martial Artist)
  7. Paladin (Holy Knight)
  8. Ranger (Nature Warrior, think Stryder from LotR)
  9. Rogue (Thief, Specialist)
  10. Sorcerer (Spell Caster)
  11. Warlock (Evil Spell Caster)
  12. Wizard (Book Spell Caster)

Now I know these aren't 100% every type of that class, but it was to give the guys a general idea of what that class might pertain to.

So, needless to say, after they all picked their characters the party is-
  1. Barbarian
  2. Bard
  3. Warlock

It seems like an interesting combination. CG Barb, CN Bard, LE Warlock.

They are a bunch of creative guys, I hope they enjoy it. The guy playing the Bard is a literal real life Jack-of-all-Trades type of guy.

Sounds fun! Their adventuring troupe should double as a touring death metal band.

It's funny because they've all delved into music at one-point-or-another in their lives'.

The person who is playing the Bard is currently in a band, and did a show not too long ago.

Ha, a touring band could be a natural fit for them. Bard on strings, barbarian on drums, warlock on vocals?

Or it could be the exact sort of thing they want to avoid, of course. Is this one-shot a short prefab or a homebrew?

It will be a homebrew, so they will have a lot of unconstricted freedom.

I will setup the story and the premise, they will go from there.

As beginners, I would have offered them only the 4 iconic classes, but I am totally sure these people will play this non-iconic group well anyway :) It's not so much a matter of being able to play non-iconic characters, but rather my general idea that when you start something new you should start from the basic traditional options before moving to other options.

Hmm - for some reason Rush is coming to my mind... Perhaps I can just picture a barbarian surrounded by a ridiculous amount of percussion! :)

For some reason when I think adventuring party or D&D and band, my mine immediately goes to any band Ronnie James Dio was in.

Ever listen to half of his songs? They sound like a fantasy adventure.

I mean the man was in:
Elf
Rainbow
Dio
Black Sabbath
Heaven & Hell

Just watch the Holy Diver music video.

Or listen to the end of Magica, where they tell a I believe 30 minute story.

Was never into that kind of stuff though I enjoyed a couple of Rainbow tracks back in the day :)
