30 Levels

At any rate, if memory serves, my black box Basic D&D "Master" set (coincidentally ALSO released in 1984) went up to level 36, so I don't see how 30 levels is some sort of new-fangled heresy.

QFT.

And, in 1st edition AD&D, there were no upper limits for levels (except racial ones). You could play as high as you wanted to. Gasp! Shock! Horror! How videogamey!

I hope that a 20th level 3.5 character is approximately equal to a 30th level 4.0 character, so that advancement is simply happening in smaller steps. I have no interest in increasing the power level similar to the current epic system, it's just not the style of gaming I look for in D&D.

ahm, if I understood correctly what was said about 4E, the game will go up to level 30 but it is more like stretching the current level 7-17.

I expect to have 1st level characters who are able to maybe even cast a fireball, (maybe thats stretching it, but 2nd level spell will most likely be in) and maybe you will be able to cast 9th level spells (or what ever is their equivalent) at 29th or 30th level.

This will be a new edition, and I think they will butcher a bunch of sacred cows for a better gaming experience... actually, I expect them to do just that.

I hope the opposite. :heh: :) For ease of converting back and forth, I would want 4e and 3e levels, from 1-20 anyway, to be roughly equivalent.

QFMT (more truth).

I hope (against all odds) we don't have 8 more months of accelerated cries of "munchkin", "videogamey", "roll-playing", etc. about every other change in this new edition. That will be a hard lead-in to actual 4e. It was silly enough before.

Besides, unlimited level caps would be a step -away- from that, as most CRPGs cap out at some level value (usually 99).

Hey all! :)

For me this is the best news so far.

The second best news being the Wayne Reynolds covers to the core rulebooks.

Tie the two together and it appears we will be getting Orcus in the Monster Manual.

4E is getting worse the more I hear about it...
I couldn't agree more... I'm going back to Warhammer & GURPS... or WoW, if I want to play a video game - and it has 70 levels!!! Sounds twice (and a bit) as good :\

The cynical side of me (as if I had another one) thinks that changing the level structure is probably part of their plan to make it harder to do conversions and use older material. If the rumors about prolonging the "sweet spot" are correct, I don't see how that wouldn't mean spreading out the power over the additional new levels.

Exactly. 4E levels are 3.5E levels in dog years. :)

Really, it's a non-issue. Role-playing games that don't use levels don't have that problem. Why not create a level system without a power cap?

Based on the scale from the seminar:

1-10 Heroic -- my feeling is that this represents the feel of play from 5th to 8th. (maybe 3rd to 8th if you feel Herioc at 3rd. I don't). Note that it starts at 1. The triple starting hp of SWSaga probably a good likelihood.

11-20 Paragon -- in old parlance this is the Supers levels. Likely 9th to 14th in feel. With maybe a few abilities bumped up to Epic and some pulled done from 15th+

21-30 Epic -- Likely the 15th and above feel. Some 3e Epic stuff but mostly just the stuff that feels 'epic' moreso than old 3e stuff labelled epic.

Grim 'n gritty and E6 style play probably phased out.
