I think it should be clear how LoS is achieved by looking at the map. That said, he had disadvantage from darkness, AND you had 1/2 Cover, but yet - the roll was high enough. Still, could have gone a LOT worse than that!

Well, the NPC (DM) is strongly indicating the sewer is the way to go. @FitzTheRuke, do the oxen need to be moved to get access to the tunnel?

You can try to open the grate under them, as long as they aren't standing on it. But it wouldn't be a bad idea to move them. In the least, they could be a meat shield.

A few niggling correction things:

1) Am I correct that Imani's Sending Stones are held by Lorent, Aywin, and Shamal (I had thought Urgan, but Merrick seems to think Shamal).

2) Similarly, Darius has the Lightbringer sword, right? If not, Loklafd could carry it. (He could probably use it instead of his spear, though he likes his spear).

3) Merrick has 1/4 Hit Dice. @TaranTheWanderer You have it listed as 0/3 but he's Level Four. He's got one left.

4) Don't assume that I'm using NPCs to hint at you - I mean, I suppose that sometimes I sort-of am, but it's really more that any given NPC has its own opinion on what you should do. They won't always be correct. Stryke, being a Drow, would rather get further underground by any means necessary. OTOH, he knows a thing or two about the layout of the place. He suggests you use the Sewer, for sure, but I am considerably more neutral on the subject. That said, he could be right. He seems like a practical fellow.

Darius did not take the sword, with his strength it is a waste. I went back and I don't think we decided who took the weapon. If we want I can take it and use it similar to a torch which I was carrying before. Unless someone else want to claim it who will use it as a weapon.
