A Couple Things I Need To Get Off My Chest

They don't!?
Nope, in 4e in the MM:

"They can be found anywhere but prefer to lair in coastal caves, attacking and plundering ships that sail too close."

"Although highly adaptable, blue dragons often lair in coastal caves with entrances that aren’t easily accessible by land."

Yep, this. The "desert chromatic" in 4E is the brown dragon (aka the sand dragon).

That makes so much more sense. :) Although, I did like the 'Mirage/illusion' thing blue dragons had going; appropriate for the desert.

Thanks for the tipoff.

Water is NOT inherently cold. Water has the second highest specific heat capacity of any known compound, which means that cold water takes a lot of heat to boil while hot water takes a lot of coldness to freeze. That’s why [unheated] pools are cold during the day but warm at night. Water is the earth’s moderating agent; it keeps the temperature relatively constant. That’s why desert temperatures are so extreme; because they lack water. Water has a few other peculiarities, but they’re not really relevant to this little rant.
Water is a good conductor of heat though (26 times faster than air, I think?), which has the effect of it cooling you considerably when you get into it. So it's not totally out there.

4e's blue dragon is overlooking a suspiciously desert-like environment in the MM illustration. Consistency? What's that? ;)

It could be a rocky coastline. :p

But yeah, I don't think I'm spilling any big secret when I say that the decision to move blues out of the desert came pretty late in the game. My guess is, the art order had already been turned in.

Deserts are NOT inherently hot.

Man, am I getting tired.

I originally read this as "Desserts are not inherently hot". And I thought, "I Would Hope Not!".

Damn, I need to go to bed and soon!:p
