A mystery race ?

To all you people who're suggesting orcs, tauren, and all those other WoW races, I just have this to day: harm yourselves. D&D will never be World of Warcraft, despite what some boneheads say.
Key down the hostility there, hoss.

In WoW, there are two sides of PCs. Orcs are on the evil side.
This is wrong.

The Horde side isn't "evil". The Orcs have a warrior code of honor, the Tauren are nature-loving hippies - they and the trolls are there basically because the orcs pulled their bacon out of the fire, and thus they owe a debt. The Forsaken are the only EVIL race that's part of the Horde (and possibly the Blood Elves; I don't know a lot about them).

But as it stands, the Horde is no less "evil" than the Alliance side.

And to those who think WoW introduced Orcs as a PC race, I have this to say: Shadowrun, 1989. And that's without even looking for earlier RPGs.

OK, fair enough. But they are on 'the other team,' not the one with humans, elves, and dwarfs.

Not anymore. The 4e changes to races seems to make drow, elf, and eladrin all completely separate races that are distantly related to each other (cousins, in the sense that dwarves and gnomes have been called cousins in the past).

Is that something I missed on a blog somewhere? Where do you get that idea?

Actually, there's only three: eladrin (sun elves, high elves, gray elves), elves (wood elves, wild elves), and drow.

Actually that was me being dyslexic. I meant half-elves. Have they specifically mentioned the breakdowns you are listing above?

To quit picking on Orcs, specifically, I just think that the monstrous/enemy races need to stay that way. No PC orcs, goblins, kobolds, or even drow*.
Half-orcs, sure...it's not their fault they were born they way. But I think half-orcs are out because they didn't offer much. Tieflings I like...they are unique to D&D and should fit the bill for people who want to play the outcast or someone with a dark past or personality.

As for the rest of them, let the monsters be monsters!

*Just because I suspect drow is the mystery race doesn't mean I want it to be.

And I say the opposite. Not everyone plays Heroic Fantasy. The core rules should give the options, rather than the restrictions.

Humans are monsters. Some of the worst evil imaginable is committed by people.

People playing monsters has been around for a long dang time. There's clearly enough support for it. There's enough pop culture to support it.

Let players have the options and DMs decide on what's best for them.

I think it'll be drow, but I wish it was orcs.

4/8ths of the races being elf-flavored is just too much for me, and I'd feel a lot better about banning <50% of the PHB races in my home games -- and I *will* be banning elves, probably halflings too.

Hey, elves and halflings are in the MM too.
And so are plenty of 'good' monsters.

Point made: I can't make a case based on the MM table of contents.

So I'll just leave at what I stated in my last post: let the monsters be monsters.
