So what does this mean to you?

To me, it means regardless of what the rules say, be yourself. No matter what, fight for yourself to be accepted. Because if you don't, you will simply lose yourself in a morass of nonsensical rules made to turn everybody into a useless soulless robot.

To thine own self be true, no matter what the cost. Regardless of the rules.

Having read a fair bit of e.e. cummings I'm betting it was originally about non-conformity. What I take away from it is, never stop fighting for whatever you believes makes you "you".

I would say, though out of context, an argument could be made that even a conformist who truly believes they are the person conforming to the norm is correct in their "precious sense of rightness" in standing up for who he/she believes him/herself to be. But then again, I have never believed in non-conformity simply for non-conformity's sake, but have always thought that personal expression to be the highest form of freedom.

So what does this mean to you?

It means somebody doesn't know how to write in straight lines?

More seriously, I don't know if I've ever really had a strong opinion about conformity vs non-comformity. I am me, simple as that, and as long as I am happy with myself, I know that my wife and kids will always smile and laugh with me. Don't much care what anyone else thinks of that.

Oops - Guess you didn't know I was a professional drummer/percussionist for quite some time... Conformity is overrated, knowing how to count however is not. :D (Typical guitarist attempting to count in rhythm: 1,2,2,3,4, uh 1..2,3,4...5,1,....2...3,4,5.)
