Morgan was concerned about how closely they were circumventing the town but most of the trails around it were close and Sir Isteval didn't have the ability to go off trail. Morgan shook his head. Isteval should have gone into town but Morgan was worried he might have been recognized.

It was curious that the town was so busy reinforcing its walls. Had the same rumours of Thayan spies reached this town also? Morgan had a bad feeling about it as he thought about how the Red Wizards had used both Orcs and Gnolls to stir up trouble.

"Curious."

Just random RP.

Dandin hops off of Ol'Sooty's back to give a series of hand gestures and a nod to the bear. In turn, the bear walks up from behind Sir Isteval, nuzzling the arm above his bad leg so that the Knight has an excuse to lean on someone for a bit.

"I think Ol'Sooty has taken a bit of a liking to you, Sir." Dandin says cheerfully.

The large marshal looked down at Tommi and Lionel and considered Tommi's word. The two young men really looked like no match for trolls - but they also had something in their eyes that showed that they'd seen more of the world than your average fool. He nodded and said, "Well, I don't know that you'd be able to do much to scare 'em off, but if you are feeling brave, I sure could use someone to go have a look at how many of them we might be facing, how they're organized, and if they're still headed this way."

"We thank you, sir," said Tommi, dipping his head. "And if it's not too much to ask, sir, a riding pony would ensure we dealt with them as soon as we could." He adjusts Gutter, hanging from a loop on his borrowed belt. Tommi feels the blade vibrate, and he imagine that it thirsts for troll-flesh.

Tommi knows it's cheeky to ask, but if not now, when?

The Marshal scratched his head and looked around, "I'm not sure we have any riding ponies. At least, none to spare. Besides, they might just give you away. Trolls can smell horses, and they like to eat them."

Tommi nods and shrugs, as if that were obvious. "It's easier to find them if they come to us..." he offers, one eyebrow raised.

OOC: Tommi isn't pressing this: they have a mission, and they're trying to help here, but time is short and if this gambit doesn't work hell move on. (I myself don't like keeping the party split). If there's a shop that might sell a Tenser's disk scroll, he'll buy it and whatever 50 gp needs for transcribing the spell, and he'll look for a chair. But two hours and he's done, with either a (a) horse and a troll mission, (b) a scroll and a comfy chair, or (c) nothing to show for his time, in which case he'll have another drink.

The marshal laughed and said, "Well. If you want one for 'bait', then I guess we could spare an old mule. Poor fellah's seen better days, and I can't say I'm proud to see him go by being eaten by trolls, but his sacrifice will be for the greater good."

He called to a dwarf subordinate and ordered, "Dolgar, please run and bring Carl over."

A few minutes passed, and the dwarf returned with a sway-backed old mule. Sturdy, but past its prime.

The marshal patted it on the back and said, "Sorry, Carl."

Then he instructed Tommi and Lionel, "Try not to get yourselves killed. Get me distance, numbers, organization. If you can, identify leaders and see if you can find any clues as to their intents. If we're lucky, they're not planning anything beyond raiding caravans on the road, and won't be bold enough to hit the town if it looks defended."

After Tommi and Lionel had agreed, said their farewells, and were down the road leading the mule, the dwarf commented to the Marshal, "Ye've sent them lads t'their deaths."

The tall half-giant nodded grimly and said, "Probably. But you never know. There was something about them that gives me hope. We'll have to wait and see."

And they turned back to fortifying the tower.

His task completed, Tommi thanks the Marshal, and says "C'mon Carl." He clicks his cheek twice and grabs the halter, and swings up onto what appears to be a delapidated well-worn saddle. As he leaves, he turns to the Marshall and says, "We'll see you soon."

As soon as Lionel is set, they head back to join the others, with a horse, a full purse (3sp paid for the drinks), news of a troll, a side quest, and no expectation that they will ever return.
