Yeah, that one’s a head scratcher.
Especially due to the fact that the SCAG's section on Bladesingers specifically mentions certain types of them using whips! Quote from the SCAG:
Snake. Practitioners of these styles use a flail, chain, or whip. Viper style uses a whip, despite its inelegance as a weapon, and has almost as long a history as the lion style. Its masters punctuate their bladesong with a stunningly rapid rhythm of whip cracks, which can keep many foes at bay and allow the bladesinger space to cast the cruel spells of poison and disease favored by the style.
What the hell, WotC?!?! You're contradicting yourself left and right!!!

IMHO, Reach weapons should be usable without a feat/metamagic. It just makes sense to allow them to use reach weapons, and there's absolutely no reason to not allow them to use it, both from a balance and lore perspective!

Yeah, I’d just change the wording to say “a creature within the weapon’s reach” instead of “a creature within 5 feet.”

All I have to do to get this combo working again is have my familiar hand me 1 silver piece in exchange for the Shadow Blade. Boom, now it's a weapon worth 1 sp, and is eligible for BB/GFB.
I mean, you could argue that Shadow Blade can be used as an improvised shortsword and is therefore worth the equivalent of 10 gp.
