What about a shillelagh though? I could pick up a tree branch (worth nothing) and cast shillelagh on it.

No you cant. You can only cast it on a club or a staff.
A tree branch could be considered a club. Clubs are worth 1 sp.

It's really simple. If you're a player ask the DM to make a ruling. If you're the DM, make a ruling; err on the side of fun. If shennanigans result that spoil the fun, point it out and change the ruling.

By a strict reading of the rules, magic weapons, especially legendary items and artifacts, do not have a monetary value as such and are not eligible components for GFB and BB. ;-)

Is there a specific place where that's stated (magic weapons not having monetary value) explicitly?

In the "treasure" section of the PHB it's stated that magic items have value "far beyond simple gold".
While it may be reasonable to interpret "far beyond" as being more than "at least" 1sp, there's no explicit monetary value given, so it's not strictly possible to evaluate if a particular magic item is worth more or less than 1sp.
