It seems like as good a time as any to hold the fifth, and final, Morningstar Give-away.

The first four winners were Argent Silvermage, Cthulhu's Librarian, Conaill and Shadeus. They have each won copies of Morningstar.

For those who just want to get started, however, here's how you play:

I post a question, you answer it any way you like, in at least one sentence. If your post corresponds to a number I've rolled on a d20, you win a signed copy of the Morningstar campaign setting. Morrus has offered to verify the winning numbers in the case of a dispute. So let's get started... The only change to the rules is that instead of waiting until Monday to find out if you've won, I'll announce the winner after the thread is done. Remember, one entry per person (only the first post counts, but feel free to post followups), and my posts don't count towards the total.

One special rule for this final contest: Since it's Saturday, the traffic might not be good enough to wrap this up in a timely manner. If I determine that the posts are coming too slowly, I may allow people who have previously posted to reenter, with additional posts; therefore, you *may* have more than one chance to win today.

OK; Let's do this.

Let's keep today's question simple; "What do you look for in a fantasy setting?"

I look for innovative ideas, and fresh ways of looking at familar topics. That said, I am generally reluctant to get involved with a setting that introduces 57 new races, cultures, and classes. That sort of stuff can interest me in a novel, but in a game setting, where half a dozen people all need to know and understand the 'way the world' works, a setting with heaps of new material can be difficult to implement successfully.

Style. I dont like settings with no real sense to them, like FR (beyond the sense of total munchkinism). SL has style, Midnight has style, steampunk has style. Or if not style, then "feel".

If I may say so myself, I think Morningstar fulfills all of these criteria.


The whole world was designed to fit together; and isn't just a hodge-podge of ideas flung against a wall. It's got A unified theme: The golden age threatned by a Dark prophecy, 5 types of cool elves (fitting a variety of definitions of 'cool'), as well as other character options that fit the world. That said, there are quite a few new elements which were brought in to evoke the proper flavor. On the other hand, these are designed to be quickly and intuitively understandable.

Inspiration. A setting should be loaded with interesting places and ideas that entice me to bring my players there.

Well I look for something fun, well thought out and has many interesting places already mapped out/described as well as places that I can make my own.
 

Something that makes me emotionaly interested in the setting. For me if I can't at least feel some emotion over the setting, I can't get into it. It can be any emotion... wonder, fear, excitement... But it's gotta be something.
