Conjuration Rule I'm imagining?

Henry

Autoexreginated
If someone could please help me, here, I'd appreciate it.

Until recently, I could have sworn I'd read a rule in the 3.5 books that said that Conjuration spells typically don't allow spell resistance, whereas evocation does, and that one of the designers (Andy Collins) said that they had done this to allow Conjuration some more punch, and to add another "balance/counterbalance" thing for combat options. (Just like you use hold spells/will saves on the warriors, and fireballs/reflex saves on the priests, and petrifies/fort saves on the rogues)

However, not only can I NOT find this as a concrete rule anywhere I look, but the spell compendium has several Conjuration spells that allow spell resistance. Am I getting senile? :) Am I just remembering some conversational talk on a messageboard from around 2003? Or is there any rules info that falls in line with this?

Conjuration rule

Henry,

Could't find it with a quick look in the SRD, however if you look in the D&D Glossary on WotC's website

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/glossary

under Spell Resistance there's a para that says:

"Conjuration: These spells are usually not subject to spell resistance unless the spell conjures some form of energy, such as Melf's acid arrow or power word stun. Spells that summon creatures or produce effects that function like creatures are not subject to spell resistance."

Hope this helps .

Cheers

That's funny, because the spell entry for (Melf's) Acid Arrow specifically says that Spell Resistance does not apply....

From the SRD:

Acid Arrow
Conjuration (Creation) [Acid]
Level: Sor/Wiz 2
Components: V, S, M, F
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Long (400 ft. + 40 ft./level)
Effect: One arrow of acid
Duration: 1 round + 1 round per three levels
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

I did start a thread I when I noticed that all the offensive Conjuration spells in the 3.5e PH did not allow spell resistance, but I don't think you would have gotten me mixed up with someone from WotC :). If this was indeed an internal guideline at WotC (and I personally think it's a pretty good one), you have correctly observed that some Conjuration and Evocation spells have ignored it.

The orb spells have saves, but only against the secondary effects. What other exceptions are there, do they involve partail saves for secondary effects?

The orb spells really shouldn't be conjuration spells... I think infiniti made the point- How exactly is a GIANT ORB OF FORCE NOT a magical effect?

Erm, anyway.

Remember, if you make Orb of Force Evocation, you don't end up with non-magical force orbs hanging around afterwards.

As an instantaneous Conjuration (Creation) effect, the orb is non-magical and remains after the spell is cast :)

Orb of Force

I have reasoned Orb of Force to be like a big Snap-Pop. You conjure this little bomb into your hand, throw it at the bad guy, and it explodes like an M-80. That's quite some force. It also has the side effect of being damn loud, which makes it a rather unstealthworthy spell.

In fact, I did that with all the orbs, which created a need for differences between, say, Orb of Fire and Fireball. I threw away that silly rule about throwing the glowing bead of dung for Fireball. Thus, for firing through an arrow-slit, Orb of Fire needs the touch attack, but Fireball simply needs line of effect to the point of origin.

...Sweet... I'm so collecting them from now on, painting them, and making a bowling alley in my character's house...

Maybe the pins can be enemies altered by the polymorph any object spell... or set with little gems after I've used trap the soul...

Man... that'd be awesome.
