First Post
My brother, who is a...

New England (i.e. yankee),
Vegetarian,
Agnostic,
Liberal,
Intellectual

has moved to Myrtle Beach South Carolina.

He is also a gamer. (Prefers 3.0 edition)

He seem to be having some trouble settling in.

Does anyone here have any advice or suggestions that would help him?

You mean besides "MOVE BACK!" ? :p

His best socialization bet is probably churches, odd advice though that may be to give an agnostic. If he can find a UU church, it would likely concentrate the people closest to him socially in one place.

How is he having trouble? Is it socially, work related?

Yes

His girlfriend threw him out of their place in Cambridge, Ma. over the summer. He spent a couple of months living with my other brother in Maine. He was feeling like he needed a new direction when a friend of his from highschool suggested that he come down to S.C.

He has been there for about a month now, has been on 30 job interveiws (no luck yet), and he does not eat fried chicken.

I was just wondering if any enworlders had advice on being a member of the subculture in the south.

I think it is hard making new friends and meeting people no matter where you go. Going places other people go might help -- join an exercise club, see if there is a local college where he can take a class or something.

He should look up the local game stores; that should provide him with a pool of people to hang out with for a bit until he figures things out. All the Southern gamers I know fit the last three items on your list.

'Vegetarian' might be harder :) But we serve veggies down here as well, you know? A touristy place like Myrtle Beach probably has a vegetarian place, and most of the upscale groceries will still have a vegan section.

He might try sending an e-mail to the Mystic Waters Group asking for recommendations. Admittedly, it is a Pagan group, but they're "eclectic Pagan", which in my experience usually means at least a few members who are really Agnostic, themselves, and are just hanging out 'cause they don't fit in elsewhere. Plus, frequently Pagan = Veggie, Liberal, and/or Intellectual, so they might be able to make some recommendations there, too. :)
