Wergil accepted the futility of trying to shove the creature, but used his shield as best he could to guard as he thrust his rapier forward, trying to find some vital spot while not knowing if his attacks were having any effect at all..

Farshid's magic does not appear to have any effect on the specter, who reaches forward into Wergil and begins extracting the life from him.

GM: Farshid's attack misses. The specter hits Wergil for 8 points of damage. Yavathol, Wergil needs to make a DC 10 Constitution save, please. GlassEye, it's your turn again.

Kasimir

Kasimir swung sword and axe at the specter. He wasn't sure what the thing was doing to Wergil but he didn't think it was good. He didn't plan to give the undead thing another chance, if he could help it.

"Wergil! How do you fare?"

A cacophony of sound fills the air, with Wergil's gurgling, the specter's ethereal moaning, and Kasimir's shouting as he swings his weapons violently into the ghostly being. As suddenly as it appeared, the specter is vanished, and the room grows deathly quiet, save for the nursery door swaying on creaking hinges.

We like to think of unconsciousness as peaceful, at least for the patient. An absence of external stimuli, nothingness but basic life functions until the brain re-engages.

That's not the case with the undead of course. The touch of a wraith, a spectre's grasp -- these are things that pierce through to another part of you, beyond your brain, beyond your body. They pierce through to the part that experiences pain. Constant pain.

Mr Aldershot, lying unconscious, does not move and does not twitch. His brain has not engaged. But you must not think that he isn't screaming to get out, to come back to the surface, to have surcease of pain, and to forget the torment he currently endures.

"Pah! 'Tis but a scratch," No way was Wergil going to show weakness in front of the bigger man, but the truth was, he really wasn't sure how he was feeling, and he suspected when the adrenaline wore off, he would have to have a little rest. Whatever the monster had done to him was unlike any of the hits he had ever taken in training, unlike anything he had experienced before.

A kinder man would have subsequently realised that Mr Aldershot must have been feeling far worse, but that didn't occur to Wergil. As he glanced over at the prone halfling, he simply felt glad that he was still standing, and thought that maybe he could use the halflings situation as an excuse to take that rest..

"Lets hope that there are no others around, that the sound of the fight would have attracted them. Does the halfling yet live, Farshid?"
