D&D General D&D is so mainstream...

... that 5,000 miles and an entire continent away from where it's made, the BEHOLDER is a drink in a pub.

Mainstream media outlets regularly feature D&D, as do popular TV shows like The Big Bang Theory and Stranger Things, and now it's in pubs across the world!

The pub in question is The Hobbit, in Southampton. The ingredients of the Beholder appear to be melon liquer, blue curaçao, and vodka energy.

Snarf- D&D is so mainstream ….

Olaf the Stout- How mainstream is it?

Snarf- It’s so mainstream that Kim Kardashian walked up to D&D and said, “Ya basic!”

…and that’s because she recognized that they were playing Moldvay.

Thank you! I’m here all week, and you can catch me in the Poconos this summer!!!!

You sure you want to give away your location to Interpol like that? Because that joke was a crime against humanity! :P

do the smart thing and support ALL editions. Be nice if the DMs Guild opened up permission to publish D&D material for ALL editions, instead of 5e only
I agree it would be nice to support all editions, and I prefer 3.5e.

But I don’t rag on 5e, and I don’t begrudge new players the only version they know.

I’m glad WotC allow tons of old edition stuff to be sold in PDF on DriveThruRPG. The “everything was racist don’t look EVER” warnings for everything pre-5e are obnoxious, but at least WotC didn’t ban everything,

Mainstream D&D is what ruined the game for me. Anything popular usually gets ruined as the game morphs into something far too different and leaves behind those who wish to stay more conservative about it and who wish their style could be more supported. Wish it stayed niche. We had such great products and a vast number of them pre-4E days.

One day WotC, or some other company, will do the smart thing and support ALL editions. Be nice if the DMs Guild opened up permission to publish D&D material for ALL editions, instead of 5e only which is crap. It'd be nice to see a 3.5e version of some of the 5e adventures, newer monsters, and more. Or an Expanded Incarnum book, a Fiendish Codex 3: Yugoloths, a Tome of Psionics book, Monster Manual VI, and more.
No, we must ensure that WotC NEVER supports previous editions! If WotC were to support previous editions, than 3.5 and other editions might become POPULAR, and therefore MAINSTREAM.

Ergo, if you enjoy 3.5 or earlier editions, please, PLEASE, write WotC asking them not to republish material from previous editions and not to open DMs Guild to earlier edition material.

😀

The only question is: What night do they host D&D games?

My friends and I have always thought it would be smart of a backroom, one where a group could go on say Wednesday, and test their mettle against some unbeatable hour-long adventure. The pub could show the game on their TVs. Bets could be placed on who would last the longest. And the group that gets the farthest could get a free dwarven ale.
An hour's a bit tight, but The Big Bad did it in two hour shows...

Shh... don't tell anyone, but WotC does support the "classics" (O, 1, 2). Just only on Fantasy Grounds though.

Maybe WotC can publish books of previous editions like limited serie for collectors, but they are the first ones who don't want a new edition war.

And today the market strategy is lesser number, but better qualty, and D&D as multimedia franchise, trying to find some way to allow crossovers with other titles, and to hook new players.

They’ve done just this, a few times now and will probably do it again. Note that there is also print in demand at DrivehtruPRG.

BTW a soft cover PHB for 3.5 from the starter box was amazing. Who else had that?

As George Carlin asked: which is better, one ten or five twos?
Two fives right now is working for me, and that's all I'll say about that.

I think the original is "Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder", implying people look more attractive when you're drunk. (Itself a takeoff of "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder", which means people differ on what beauty is or broadly that people may find different things useful.)

So if 'beholder' is the name of the drink, as here, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder drinker."

How about "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and that's why she's still..." (or "isn't anymore...")

Or "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and that's why her magic is useless."

Or "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but she made her save and hit it with a longsword +3."

"The beholder is the beer holder." It's telekinetically endowed, of course, though they're not known to be 'hold my beer' types. Though 'hold my beer and watch this' might be heard before fighting a beholder, which are probably the speaker's last words.

I have way too many copies of PHB's of various editions.

And yes, I have the soft cover PHB for 3.5 which actually came in the box set called the Player's Kit.

It was an expansion off of the Basic Set for 3.5 if I recall, meant to expand a new player from the Basic rules to the full rules supplying a PHB (softcover) and a set of miniatures (at least I also got a set of random miniatures with my Players Kit).
