D&D Movie/TV D&D Movie Hit or Flop?

No, I'm not.

I've included every on-demand platform where both were available, and not even cared about which nations they were available in (Mario was available in more and still didn't rank as high for as long).

My bad, last time I didn't include Rakuten and Vudu, because Mario wasn't available there. It is now. Honor Among thieves is doing better in their short period of time when both movies are available.

Didn't you say it's dropped UT of tge top ten already? And you're aware those services also take a large cut?

There are two movies and a total of eight services that I've referenced and linked. Which is "it?"

Maybe I shouldn't have trusted you when you said that Mario 2023 made 75 million via on-demand viewing, but if you're suggesting that Mario had a better contract for revenue via the exact same platform in the exact same country I would like to see evidence supporting that.

It was about a month ago it will be more.

PVOD Has Been A Big Success For Universal - Dark Horizons

So I have been thinking about how well the D&D Movie will go financially. This thread is purely about the financial results of the movie not its quality.

So what counts as a hit or flop objectively? Generally I go with expenses X2 at the box office. Cost of production plus marketing then double it. This is because of the way the box office returns work.

If a movie falls under this number by a bit it's a Flop if it more than double its probably mad money. If it's a lot higher it's a hit a lot lower a bomb. No amount of Hollywood accounting can change the box office take.

If it's close it's a lot harder to call and one needs to look at where and when the movie made money. Closer to opening weekend and in USA studio gets more money. Longer it runs the more money the theatre makes and China pays the least in terms of returns AFAIK.

So that's the objective take on the box office. If it's a bomb it's gonna be obvious along with a smash hit.

Not sire how much this movie cost to maked and promote iirc it's around 90-100 million fir tge movie not sure on marketing but I'm guessing the break even point at the box office is 260-300 million range.
Made like 208.2 MILLION to date. All Hasbro wanted was a few seats. Broaden the game and get people playing THE WORLD'S MOST BS RPG!! Right? They won. Get over it really if you can't read the writing of a company deciding to market their product with a ^$@%! movie. Sorry but did I miss the Call of Cthulhu RPG movie? That BitD movie was ...... MISSING. Hasbro's counting their coin like a grinning dragon while all the critics rip their pearls to pieces. Get over money. Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez? Man put my money RIGHT HERE. Okay. The only people poopooing this film are the roads-scholars with no understanding of marketing. They spent 150M to make 208M. WoTC's long song of KISS MY @%&#)!( is on repeat.

I have no evidence, but given how much better it performed at the box office, anything else would be a real surprise

They spent $210 million to get approx 104 million + backend.

While I don't disagree in general, lets look at this differently:

They were willing to spend 60 Millions to promote tha movie.

They lost 100 Million, so only 40 Million due to production.

If they did not go through the hoop and produced a movie and just spent the 60 Million to advertise the D&D game directly. How long had that effect lasted?
HAT is out there doing continous promotion for the game.
How much money would continuous promotion of the game cost otherwise.

Since it is now a loss to dedict from tax, hiw much money is that worth? Is it the same you can write off for usual advertising?

Then, during the corona pandemie, how much had it cost the studio to pay wages if nothing had been produced. How much money was spent for assets that are still of value for the studio, which might find use in a sequel, so those costs are lowered?

Alls questions that are not answered by now.

Still, no box office success in anyway. But the question is, how much of that money is really lost. How much can be salbvaged.

Yup I've already said it's possible they make money back or Hasbro might and Paramont doesn't.

I don't see a follow up though. Warcraft is seen as a failure and it had a similar budget and got almost double. A large amount cane from China though.

Can't think of any other 100+ million dollar movie that got sequels after getting roughly 33% over it's production budget. We may not know the exact details but there's plenty of movies to compare with.

Everything you said was already unquestionable. I had different questions, that summed up to: was it worth paying about 100Million Dollars as an extended advertisment and to keep paying your people during a pandemic.
