D&D Movie/TV D&D Movie Hit or Flop?

They didn't plummet that week, but Mario being so big cost D&D in weeks 3-6. Regardless, a better release date would have maybe made the film another 30-40M in theatres at most. The bottom line is that Paramount/Hasbro overspent relative to what the movie could make because they had other interests than just the theatrical run. Hasbro in promoting the brand, Paramount in getting a solid piece of content for P+.

The movie of Street Fighter, that with Van Damme and Raul Julia in his last work, was one of the best example of cinematographic flop, but years after, they are still making money.

After this there was an anime, and this is a cult movie for the fans.

Do you know "Fantaguirò"? It is a romantic fantasy cinematographic saga, in the first half of 90's, with five movies and a cartoon serie, produced in Italy. If it enjoyed four sequels (the last one was too much "jumping the shark") then D&D: HaT should deserver a new opportunity for a sequel.

to the tune of 500k a year. At that rate HAT would break even in 100 years ;) They would have been better off just getting interest on the 200M in that case. No risk and doesn’t take as long…

100 years is generous that's just the production budget.

VoD is unlikely to cover the marketing.

Another week in the Top 5 U.S. streaming shows, top 3 movies. Ahead of "success" Creed III is "flop" Honor Among Thieves. D&D remains ahead of Ted Lasso and Succession, the media zeitgeist darlings with dozens of hours of back catalog.

It's still not available on P+ or streaming anywhere outside of the U.S. It has launched on Rakuten in parts of Europe, immediately in the top 10.
Once Honor Among Thieves took over the #1 spot worldwide on Google it never lost it. It regained it on iTunes after a couple day dip. Over on Vudu it's dropped pretty regularly, but is back in the top 5.

On Amazon it's been a top 10 movie for two weeks now, and is back at its high of #3.

On streaming there's little doubt that this is a success. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has had lasting staying power and is gaining popularity, not losing it as is typical for all movies (HaT is ahead of most movies in the late Winter window, including those that outsold it in theaters).

Honor Among Thieves is no longer in the top 10 most watched streaming shows+movies in the United States. It is still the 6th most watched movie, ahead of Air and Creed.

Internationally it remains #1 on iTunes and Google for another week. It hit #1 on Rakuten for two days, but is currently #5. Much of the Rakuten variance is because it is being released in a new market almost every day.

On Vudu, US only, it dropped to 7th and has been out 53 days.
On Amazon, with limited distro to the US, Japan, and Germany on different release dates, Honor Among Thieves is spent the week drifting between 4th and 5th.

We're nearing two months of digital availability and D&D continues to be in the top 5 basically everywhere. It isn't yet on Pluto, which has a massive base of ad supported viewership.

If you think people's viewing habits connect to revenue there's no doubt that Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is a successful streaming/digital release and almost certainly better than it was in theaters.

This doesnt surprise me. I could see a lot of people saying, "interesting, but I got a lot of other choices at the moment" during its theatrical run.

I see this is not being a good year for blockbusters. D&D: HaT hasn't been too well in the box office, but if we compare with the rest of titles realesed in the cinemas for the last months, then we can hope a right future for the cinematographic universe.

Except there's no dollar amount attached. VoD doesnt make anywhere close to the same amount as theatrical release.
It could ve streaming well and only generate 19-20 million dollars in revenue minus the cut of the service.

Even if it got as much money as say Mario (unlikely) I don't think you realize how big a hole it's failure left at the box office. Mario money woukd still mean the movie lost money.

And I suspect of they beat Mario's money haul they would ve screaming about it.
