D&D 5E D&D Mythic Odysseys of Theros Previews!

Mythic Odysseys of Theros may have been delayed until the end of July for most of us, but Fantasy Grounds has revealed some (undoubtedly specially approved) previews for us to look at in the meantime!

That monster list already looks utterly amazing  I wonder if we would see stats for the gods themselves?

It's also excellent to see the Wizards D&D team has grown quite substantially, and they seem to be applying the same steady hand in guiding the formation of their books. Great all around.

Thought he was shipped to MtG after 4e tanked?

Nope, he was on the 5E development team (his focus was on creating the default Setting Bible for all the Races and Monsters), and was the lead writer of the current DMG (check the credits).

After 5E was ready to ship, he wanted to be involved in world building, and M:tG was hearing into overdrive for making new Settings. Which put him in place to complete the M:tG/D&D crossover.

There’s an interview with him and he said something about him world building for Magic kinda just naturally lead to him using D&D to do some of it.

Thing was, when he went over to Magic, he started working on Zendikar for the Block set and for the art book. But he still had a home D&D game. He didn't want to spend extra time outside of work on another Setting, so he made a homwbrew document for him and his players...then he asked his supervisors if it would be cool to spruce up that homwbrew document with some art and put it out for free. Then that was popular, and here we are.

Ah, cool, and thus are many cool things born of skunkworks.

why now though? Why did the Magic and D&D mashup result in product now? And why does it work? Is there something special in the air now? Some kind of gathering magic? :)

Wasn’t it tried many times?

It was actually because of the coincidence of James Wyatt making the jump, and putting in off-houra work to his homwbrew, and how the free stuff was received. The Magic team ran surveys with questions like "Do you like this?" and "would you pay money for this?" The answer being "Yes, take my money!"

D&D garnered sales from the mashup, but has magic? I wonder if there is any evidence of benefit to Magic’s bottom line? Or does it matter as long as it’s a successful WotC product? Clearly WotC likes doing it.
