D&D weekenders | Kore | dead thread

OK guys, thanks for the input.

We will abandon the weekend concept as it will allow Avatar V to join in more easily.

Avatar V, your welcome to join. Take a look through this thread then post up a character. We will go with the "masterless sword" concept. You should still purchase a light warhorse and military saddle.

Sam, you can remain a retainer of House Oe if you wish, or be independent. If you remain a retainer, then you will be under a much greater obligation to put the wishes of the House before your own.

We will finalise the characters over the next few days and I will start a IC, RG and new OOC thread on Monday (or as soon as we are done). I'll add [recruiting] to the current thread til then. All new threads will will be labled Kore | Kingdom of Harmony. I will consolidate the background notes into the new OOC thread.

I have some more background notes to post, I'll try to get them up in the next 24 hours or so.

T minus 2 days to "Go".

I'll follow along on the Masterless Sword concept. Thaerl consider himself "attached" to House Oe, though not a retainer. He hopes to shepard others along to see the correctness of Ashtren's path.

OK, Sam, how does this work for you.

A very rough and ready initial concept. Some of the ideas will change in responce to how things play out in the game.

The Godhead created everything, is everything. So the wise know.

The nature of the Godhead is divided into 9 Aspects (ie: the Domains). Each Aspect is represented by a single kanji character. Thoughout the Kingdom, there are hundreds of sects each emphasising two or three different Aspects of the Godhead as the principle means to purity. Each church uses the relevent characters as their symbols of power.

Note: While the Aspects of Evil, Chaos, Death and Magic are considered to be intergral elements of the Godhead, the teaching of them is not permitted or, as in the case of Magic, frowned upon, in the Kingdom of Harmony. Study of these Aspects is undertaken but only under the Emperor's control. This is not common knowledge.

Sects incorporating the Aspect of War and/or that of Law are traditionally the most well supported by the Houses of the Kingdom, their principle teachings neatly coinciding with the interests of the Houses and Shogunate - legitimacy and power. The School of War and Law is one of the most powerful Schools in the Kingdom, being the official School of a number of Houses.

However, while not politically well supported, the School of War and Strength is one of the most widespread, having gained an extensive following amoung the soldiers of the Houses. The School of War and Stength has small temples across the country. The school is very careful to limit its attention to the concerns of the individual warrior, deliberately avoiding getting involved at a political level. This policy has allowed it to coexist harmoniously alongside the School officially supported by the Lord of the district.

Your character is a priest of War and Strength from a temple in the District of Oe. House Oe, while officially supporting another Church, has always treated your School with great respect, recognising its importance to its warriors. Indeed, House Oe is rather unusual in that there are a number of different Schools represented in its District.

Your character has chosen, has been asked or has been required, to walk with the masterless swords, to bring to them the wisdom and guidence of your school.

I know you said that the detachment of soldiers we're with is mostly human, but there were a couple non-humans. Would it be alright if I played an elf? If you think an elf doesn't really fit in the campaign, that's fine; I can be human. Let me know what you would prefer. Also, I was thinking that my character concept could be a rogue/wizard. He'd have all the proficiencies he needs to be to be a warrior, but when in battle he'd rely more on craftiness and cleverness then raw strength to get the job done. I know that this sort of strays from the original idea of a human soldier, but I'd be happy to work with you to come up with in-game reasons for him to be a little different. Let me know what you think. Thanks!

Mike

Also, thanks for letting me join :) This is exciting.

I like the background DH. Works for me. Let's go with Thaerl has been requested to walk with the masterless swords by my school.

"To walk with the masterless is no easy task. They are widely held to be without honour. Many are. And many of those that have it bitterly resent the presumption and arrogence of the retained swords. You will need strength. You will be tested. But it is a honourable path that you have chose to take Thaerl."

Sam, religion is somewhat a work in progress in the game, so feel free to suggest and request.

Avatar, the principle requirement is that your character can handle a sword. I have no problem with the rogue concept. He wouldn't be the first soldier to prefer to operate in the shadows. Magic is more of a difficulty. Magic, as opposed to divine spellcasting, is viewed with great suspicion in the Kingdom of Harmony. (I don't really have any impression of how magic fits into the social order at this stage). Of course, there is the option of taking a cleric of a school of Magic/something (see the earlier post on religion). Being an Elf is the most difficult. Basically, there is no Elf community in the Kingdom as I see it.

So post your concept and present your case. Then we can thrash it out it. No promises mind ...

DH,
Well, I'm fine switching races if you think it would work better in the campaign. I mean, you know the world better then me and it's your game. So, if you say no elves, I'm not going to argue. But if there's a chance I could sell you on it, here's my idea. I've got the stats here and I'll post the background down below. Feel free to let me know anything that needs to change:

Background:

Kaijia was born many years ago to the west of the mountains to a somewhat well-known elven family. He spent his childhood in some of their great cities buried deep in the woods west of the mountains, isolated from the rest of the world. That is, until Kaijia was 20. It was then that this peace was broken as a blood feud older then any can remember re-erupted and the orks from the mountains laid siege to his precious homeland. The elves were unprepared, thinking that the orks could not possibly have regrouped from their last confrontation. But they forgot that one elven generation was two or three orkish generations and the orks were back in full force. The war was swift and hard on the elves. They were pushed from their ancestral home and dispersed farther west into unknown lands. Kaijia's family was among the casualties and he was left an orphan. Knowing that he could not take his revenge against an entire army of orks alone, he took to living in the shadows and using his wit to trip up orks and find them unawares one or two at a time. He also drew heavily upon the magic that had been taught to him as a young elf back in his village. In time, though, the orks left, satisfied that there was nothing left to pillage, and moved east back up into the mountains.

Kaijia was left without a sense of purpose. For as long as he could remember, he had lived running from orks and then ambushing them. Every one he killed he counted as a personal payback for the havoc they had brought crashing down on his country. He did not know where to find more elves, they had dispersed by now like feathers in the wind. He knew not what lied to the west, but he knew to the east there were orks. And so, he followed them. Kaijia crossed the mountains and into new lands intent on resuming his crusade against the marauders. But this time things were different. The land was inhabitted. These 'humans' as they called themselves were everywhere, fighting amongst themselves and scoffing at his pointy ears. He had never head of humans before. And from what he could gather, the humans had no notion of him except for a few who mentioned fairytales told to children. Another thing Kaijia quickly learned was that his magic was not tolerated in these lands. Between his ears and his spellbook, he suffered a beating at the hands of more then one hateful human. Kaijia soon began hiding the fact that he was a wizard. He tried to blend into this society; it was the only one he had. But it was hard.

Then came the call he had been waiting for all his life. He heard that House Oe was sending a small troup of men to a place known as Karatsu. Now, Kaijia was not up on human politics and did not know why these men wanted to go to this rather desolate land. But he knew one thing: They were going there to battle orks. The orks had shifted targets in these last years and now were attacking men instead of elves. Ork blood was in Karatsu, waiting to be spilled. And Kaijia was not going to miss this opportunity. He packed what few belongings he owned and presented himself to Lord Oe on bended knee, pleading for a place in the expedition. He demonstrated that he was well versed with a blade, even if he wasn't a soldier by trade and he explained that he could fight from the shadows, and move like the wind at night. In the end, Lord Oe could not turn down this strange, skinny, foreigner. His heart was where it needed to be.

** Edit, changed height and weight. Flip-flopped west and east because I was mixed up about the local geography. Also, see below for a little errata on this background.

I like the way you have acknowledged the position that your character will have in the Kingdom of Harmony. You can go with the Kaijia as is. D&D elves are quite short. I think of elves in Middle Earth terms, as tall as humans. If you wish to make the character taller you may.

The geography of the Kingdom and surrounding lands is basically the same as that of the real world (Japan, China etc), so you may need to adjust the East and West thing in you background a bit. There is nothing to East of the Kingdom except the endless ocean.

You may need to adjust you timeline a little. See below.

The Orks came to the Kingdom centuries ago, swept from their own lands by the Horde. Side by side with the warriors of the Kingdom, they stood, fought and died on the shores of the Kingdom keeping it free from the Horde. In return, they were granted the right to live in the mountains of the Kingdom. The relationship between the men and the orks of the Kingdom has never been one of outright war. But orks are a fractious and aggressive race, and the relationship has never been an easy one. Most recently, conflict erupted between several Daimyo and a number the tribes. Once again the teahouses were filled with talk about a plot by the 17 tribes to overthrow the Kingdom. But there has always been such talk to a greater or lesser degree. No evidence of such a plan was, or has ever been, brought to light. Eventually, about a year ago, with the Emperor's intervention, peace of a sorts was restored.

I think I must have had the east-west thing confused; sorry about that. Just swap east and west everywhere they appear in my background. I suppose I'll edit it. As far as the timeline goes, here's an alternate story. Let me know if you think it fits any better:

When the Horde began pushing Eastward, the Orks found themselves in a hard place with no where to run but east. They were not alone, though. There was a small population of elves to their north who were not spared the wrath of the Horde and faced with similarly bleak options. The elves negotiated with the Orks in a series of hasty meetings, lobbying for a pact to defend these lands they'd held for generations against this vicious Horde. But the Orks thought the elves, few in number as they were, would be able to do nothing aginst the Horde and would not ally themselves to a losing cause. They fled west, leaving the elves to fend for themselves. The elves were largely crushed, they only survived in a few isolated places up against the mountains, hidden from the merciless Horde in thick jungles. The elves who had not been many to begin with were now so few that even those living near to their forest sanctuaries didn't know of them.

But centuries later the elves had not forgotten how the Orks had abandoned them to the cruel hands of the Horde and they sent troops to the mountains where the Orks now resided demanding remuneration. The Orks sent troops west just long enough to put down these demands of the elves. It was at this point that Kaijia saw Orks decimate his town and soon after he moved east and discovered human lands, and then House Oe.

Would this fit the history any better? If so, would I know anything more about this Horde? It sounds intriguing. Could be another vengeance Kaijia's after (he seems to hold grudges).

Also, as far as the height thing, I don't see him as being tall but I'll definately add some inches to fit with the other elves. How about 5'4".

The second background meshes better with the world as I see it. But how about this slight modification.

For almost a hundred years the scattered remains of the elves hid in the forests and survived the reign of the Horde. Then the Orks returned to their mountains, sweeping through the forests, looting and burning as they went. If any of the remaining Elves still survive in home forests, you know not. Your small community was over run and razed. For several years you stayed in the forests, hunting and hiding from the Orks. In all that time you never saw another Elf, although you killed your share of Orks. But eventually you dispaired of finding any more of your kind remaining in the forest, and so turned your face to the west. Eventually, you landed on the shores of the Kingdom.

As the Land of Oe are quite close to the mainland, this area would be the most likely place for you to have landed. However, I think it is a good idea for your character to have spent some time in the Kingdom before the campaign starts. Thus you understanding of the peoples' attitude towards Elves and magic.

You can to stay 4'10" but 5'4" would make you "a little short" rather than "diminuative". As elves, halflings and gnomes are almost completely unheard of in the Kingdom, at 4'10", many people will take you for a child at first.

Everyone

OK. So I think we are approaching zero hour. I'm going to rework my prologue (again :) ) to better mesh with your backgrounds. There are a few odds and ends that I want to attend to, and I am in dire need of some some lunch and sunshine. I am shooting to have the new OOC thread up tonight. :D
