Demon types - where did they go?

And you would be quite far off the mark in assuming the MotP was the planes as envisioned by EGG. And you need not take it from me, as he has opined so many times, including the "Q&A" thread on this board. (Which isn't to slam the MotP, its author, or its fans.) Indeed, Moore's Astral Plane article in Dragon and DCS's Queen of the Demonweb Pits present remarkably different views of the Planes than what was served up in The Dragon early on by EGG, or in the PHB, or by Kuntz and Ward in the DDG. What's a DM to do? Pick which one(s) work best for him or her and go with it, of course. Which seems to be what you and I are doing.
Do you have a link for the Q&A in which Gygax makes references to his plans for the planes? I'd like to read that.

IDHTBIFOM, it's in a box somewhere in the closet, but didn't the MM2 under Pazuzu mention that he had 6 Type VI servents with him at all times who were different from the ones mentioned in the MM and DMG? I thought that made it 12 Type VI's and I could swear that I read someplace else, though for the life I me I can't remember where, that there were 6 more bringing the total to 18 Type VI's, I not too sure on that though. I'm pretty sure about the MM2 though. It's been a lonnggg time since I opened up my 1e stuff.

Yep, yep.

"In defence, Pazuzu will seldom employ a weapon, preferring to send his bodyguard (typically 6 Type VI demons--not those listed in MONSTER MANUAL I--) and use his spell-like or mental (psionic) powers."

Planescape raised the total number of known Type VI demons to 24.

Balors really aren't strong enough for there to be so few of them, though.

Alas, not a CS, so I can't "search" the board, but its in one of the archived Q&A threads (believe Henry moved them not so long ago). Tragically, I don't remember which one... :(

(Course, you could always ask him again in the latest thread...)

The drow weren't "known" to exist as of the MM, either. Such an adherence to the letter written (and not necessarily to the spirit of what was meant) seems unnecessarily limiting.

Actually, they were. The MM1 has a paragraph under 'elf' about the drow, but it's vague and describes them merely as legends. ;)

Just settin' the record straight...

Yep.

"Drow: The "Black Elves" or drow, are only legend. They purportedly dwell deep beneath the surface in a strange subterranean realm. The drow are said to be as dark as faeries are bright and as evil as the latter are good. Tales picture them as weak fighters but strong magic-users."

So, yep again, we were both right. They aren't "known" they're "only legend", if you get my drift, which was the point I was trying to make. :D

I just did a search for the word 'planes' in posts by Col_Pladoh in both the archives and the General RPG. There is some references in Thread IV, but nothing substantial or articularly interesting. And certinaly no mention of how the 1e MotP differed from his take on things.

Ah.

Must've been on Dragonsfoot.

Or...the Pied Piper Boards.

Or...the old Gygax board.

Or....or...or...

Hm.

Well, guess we'll hafta ask him.

(Was there anything on the execution of Q1 Queen of the Demonweb Pits. I might've been associating his comments there with planar mechanics in general.)

Off the the latest "Q&A" I go.

Which Planescape product? That's probably what I'm remembering but for some reason I thought it was 18 not 24. Just curious.

Well Bregh, you're just a wealth of information. Thanks for the comfirmation. :)
