DnD/D20 Necessary Wizard Spells?

Meatboy

First Post
Good day all! I have a question/request for you. If you had to had to pare down the wizards spell list (3.x) what would you consider to be the sort of iconic must have spells that make a wizard a wizard? At least in a dnd sense.

I already have
Magic missile
Mage Armor
Shield
Sleep
Charm person
Burning Hands
Shocking Grasp
Fireball
Lightning bolt
Haste

Anything else?

This REALLY depends on whether you're playing 3.0e or 3.5e.

If you're playing 3.5e, you want color spray over sleep, and you want to focus on Conjurations rather than Evocations.

In either edition, you want silent image and mount. Those are some of the most flexible spells in the game.

Cheers, -- N

It warms my heart that you have fireball and lightning bolt on the list. They may not be the most powerful spells, but they are part of the conception of wizard to me. Heck, way back in the Dungeon! board game, they were two of the three spells a wizard had (the third being the top of my list of additional spells below).

Teleport
Identify
Dispel Magic
Read Magic
Detect Magic
Time Stop
Wish
Fly

Well, if we're talking about making a wizard a wizard and not a wizard a necromancer, for example, then just about every spell in the Evocation, Conjuration, and Transmutation schools define the wizard in my mind.

If you're looking at what spells are iconic of a DnD wizard, well then Magic Missile, Detect Magic, Burning Hands, Fireball, Lightning Bolt, Cone of Cold, and Teleport. I hear out of wizards, "I cast <one of those seven>" about twice as often as many of the other spells I can remember off the top of my head.

It depends on the other (non-spell) options you want to have available for your wizards.

What kind of feats do you them to be able to take / which feats should be attractive?

For instance, with fewer elemental spells of each level, any elemental affecting feat / abilities will be less attractive.

Here is a generic Thanks! for the replies now on to the meat and potatoes.

@ Dandu and Nifft
I guess I should have worded the question or just stuck with Iconic instead of "must have" though both sleep and colour spray are on my list.

@Particle Man and Hobogod
This is more what I was looking for when I put forward this question. I don't think I will add wish or time stop even though they seem to end up on a lot of lists and are fairly DnD centric spells. I am trying to keep the level between 1 and 5 tops.

@ green Slime
not too sure feats are pretty trimmed down I will have the major meta magics and a few other things but all in all I am trying to keep things simple.

@all
The object of the list is to add it to my own trimmed down d20 set. I am trying to keep all the quintessential dnd things and feel together while hopefully keep a page count under 50. I don't often get to play dnd anymore but when I do I dislike having to lug a small library of books with me to do it.

If you have a laptop and play somewhere with internet connection, you can google "SRD d20"
and get the OGL, which has the PHB, DMG, MM, and a few others. Certainly has the "classic" Wizard spells. :)

Too true and I usually have those things when I do play. Still I like the challenge and fun of twisting and tweaking a system. Luckily thanks to the perpetuity of the OGL I can twist and tweak to my hearts content. The little system I envision is also pretty much "levelless" and will be streamlined for oneshot adventures or dungeon crawling.
