Do you have a nickname? Not online, I mean?

Just curious; I said something about this in the "what do you name your kids" thread. Do you have a nickname?

My name (not surprising, given my username) is Joshua. To my immediate family (parents, brothers and sister), it's always been Joshua and nothing else. Not even Josh. My wife calls me Josh, though, and so do most people beyond my family.

I used to get a bit uptight about it and say "my name is Joshua", but I realized that was a losing battle. Even complete strangers when I meet for the first time and say "my name is Joshua" immediately start calling me Josh without even asking if it's OK. I'm given up caring, and now tell people I'll take either without complaint.

I had a gaming group that called my J-dawg for a little while, but that was more of a joke than anything else, so it didn't really stick. And for a while in my sophomore year of high school, I went by "Bud" to a few people. That was a bit of a joke that backfired, though, and after that year, no one did that anymore.

Well my real name is Darrin but I have been called Murf since '78 or so.
Comes from Murphy's Law since most of the time I seem to have things go wrong for no apparent reason.
But only my wife and my old friends call me Murf. My friends in the last decade use my proper name or ones I can't mention :heh:

Almost everyone calls me Rich, except my Mom and sister, who call me Richie.
My friend Matt will sometimes call me Richie as well, but he usually refers to me as The Cuteness. Where that came from, I have no idea. It started during softball practice, I think, but I have no idea why.
In middle & high school, there were a few people who decided that calling me Dickie would be cute. I didn't agree, but they stuck with it for years.
I prefer Rich, as I don't particularly like Richard, it sounds too formal to me.

Some people call me J, some call me Jon, some call me Forehead. :uhoh:

Most call me by my full name, though, which is what I prefer.

i'd never be able to call you Joshua... flashbacks of Wargames just keep coming to mind.

i've had many. Dee, Dae, Dave, Davey, Temp, Tempo, Temper, Mr. T, Beave, and Steve.

David "my evil twin is hong" Temporado

My name is Calvin, but I go by Cal. That's not really a nickname, but a diminutive, I guess. I guess I really don't have a true nickname....at least none Eric's Grandma would approve of. :)

My given name is Michael, but I've always gone by Mike. (An exception: female relatives seem to prefer Michael, sometimes even adding my middle name to make it Michael John...especially when they're annoyed with me. :D)

It's not that I mind Michael; it just feels a little formal to me. My business cards used to read "Michael", and that's how some business associates would refer to me. A few years back, when I switched from the corporate consumer-packaged-goods side to the ad agency side, I specifically had them put "Mike" on my cards.

I've had tons of less-obvious nicknames over the years, especially when I was in school. For several years in the mid-80s (when I was in college), there were people who only knew me as "Herb" (a name that was affixed to me, kind of against my will, from both the Star Trek episode "The Way to Eden", and the Burger King "Herb" commercials). Even today, I have certain friends who often use variations on my name: one frequently calls me "Miguel", another "Mikhail."

My cousin calls me C-Nev (first initial and first few letters of my last name). In college, the guys in my band called me Biggie Smalls.

I knew he was still alive! Now all we have to do is find Tupac and start making more records!

:)

Uh, let's see. Most people call me Joe, couple of girls and my fam calls me Joey.

I was called "Takedown" in high school (wrestling team) which was shortened to TJ in college (Takedown Joe).

More recently I have a friend who is diehard into WWE wrestling that decided my "wrestling name" would be Joey Railgun. That was changed to The Railgun and now just Railgun.

I have another friend who calls me Lunchbox, Lunchpail, Pail, or Deez. He is a big Kevin Smith fan. The last thing he called me was "The DM" although he has no idea what that really means, he just knows I play D&D.

Wow, so I guess in short I will pretty much answer to anything.

My family is weird, because almost no one goes by their "given" name. My legal first name is Sarah, but I have always gone by "Betsy" which is a nickname for my middle name, Elizabeth. I have other nicknames that my family calls me (and only my family), but I won't say them here because I hate those names. :P

As a side note, my dad goes by "Chief." Everyone calls him that, including us kids. He's part Hochunk. :)
