Does DR protect against falling damage?

Rend (Ex): A girallon that hits with two or more claw attacks latches onto the opponent’s body and tears the flesh. This attack automatically deals an extra 2d4+12 points of damage.

Note that under the ruling that damage reduction doesnt apply to anything without an attack roll, this attack ignores DR.

In addition a warforged juggernaut (eberron campaign setting) using its superior bull rush ability (deals damage when the character makes a bull rush) will deal automatic unpreventable damage to anything it rushes into.

I think the intent is that DR applies to anything that deals physical damage (i.e not energy damage).

on the other hand, touch attacks ignore damage reduction, so perhaps anything with no attack roll at all also ignores it.

I agree with the sage. Damage reduction, in my thinking, should reduce damage...especially normal damage like falling.

I don't really see a problem with this.

DM: You fall 200 feet and take 20d6 damage.
Player: Good thing I have DR3/- !!!!
DM: Sure is!

Are you playing 3.0? What is DR3/-?

An Iron Golem had DR 15/adamantine, that means he ignores 15pts of damage and soaks the rest. A Balor is 15/cold iron & good, so same result as the iron golem.

Again, what's the problem exactly?

The Sage is wrong, as he often is. He really should look at the rules first.
Falling damage is not from a weapon or natural attack--the ground doesn't even have to make an attack roll to hit you. It's clear in the description that DR does NOT apply.

So if you fall 50' onto a boulder, you don't get your DR 10.

But, if a hill giant drops a boulder off a cliff 50' above you, you get to take 10 off the top.

With the lower DR threshold in 3rd editon (as opposed to total immunity in 2nd ed), I have no problem with DR applying against Falling Damage.

I envision DR working against blunt, physical trauma. Such as falling, sword stikes, Anivils from the Sky, that sort of thing.

A semi-sentient DR that seems to know when the injuries are being inflicted by another creature/mechanism (i.e attack roll) just doesn't seem right to me.

Totally agree. Another example would be propping your normal sword (or multiple swords) against a tree or rock and bull-rushing an enemy with DR 15/silver onto the blade. The blade wouldn't normally damage the creature, but because my attack isn't causing the damage, he soaks it all, right?
